So, there are cameras.

I clear my throat. “I love Tor as well.”

“So, tell him. He didn’t experience any love from his family growing up. He’s more fucked up than I am. He would have died several times without Zero and me. But he’s also our best friend. He’s like a brother to the Idol Betas. Charming always keeps his promises.”

What promises?

And how could Torin have died? Is he still in danger from his family?

Shocked, I stare at Jin.

I’m acutely aware that he’s not telling me something crucial because of the cameras.

What’s the real truth of the Idol siblings and the Estate with the Idol camp?

The truth of Torin’s childhood?

I lean closer, whispering into Jin’s ear, “What’s the secret?”

Suddenly, loud footfalls come from the end of the corridor, along with angry shouting.

It must be Stapleton and his security team.

My heartbeat speeds up. I ball my fists, grabbing Jin by the hand and preparing to run.

Can we make it?

“Fuck, they’ve found us.” Jin yanks on my hand.

Instead of running, however, he pulls open a janitor’s closet that’s concealed halfway down the corridor and pulls me inside.

“What is it with you and closets?” I hiss.

Jin grins, pulling the door closed as quietly as he can. “I hid in a lot of them on the Idol Estate.”

The closet is tiny.

It’s also pitch black.

I can smell strong citrus scented cleaning products, which I knock over with a clank when I shuffle my feet. Some of them are scent canceling products for the big events, when it’s overwhelming to have large congregations of mixed dynamics.

The products are expensive but used by elites.

Jin deliberately knocks a couple more of the cans over, spilling the scent canceling liquid over the floor and hopefully, masking my stronger scent.

The closet is hot and stifling.

I cling to Jin’s hard chest. He wraps his arms more tightly around me, pulling me even closer.

In the dark, our breaths sound too loud.

His heart is thumping as loudly as mine is.

Jin cards his fingers through my hair to calm me.

Please let the stink of these products be enough to cover our scents.

Outside, I hear loud, running steps.
