“What’s going on with my Queen?” Jin demands.
Cricket protectively scrambles behind me, glancing between us.
“She’s my scent match.” Tor lowers his head. There is something dark and deep and stirring in his gaze as it meets mine. “Finally, I meet my scent match. And she’s a journalist.”
I bristle. “What do you have against journalists?”
“What don’t I? How can I trust that you won’t make money out of anything I tell you? Anything Jin does? I’ll wake up after the heat to headlines about the size of my knot.”
I open my mouth to protest, but then realize that he has a point.
Why should he trust me?
I am investigating the Idols. I do have a secret mission.
It sounds like he has good reason not to trust other journalists.
On the other hand, his delicious scent is winding around me. It tells me that this Alpha is the one I need in my heat.
“What if I promise you that everything that happens between us is off the record?” I say. “I swear, no headlines like Knot Satisfying Enough or When the Earth Did Knot Move.”
Tor straightens with a snort. “I’ve heard that before.”
“Charming,” Jin bumps his shoulder against the larger Alpha’s, “stop playing hard to get. How can you resist someone who smells of caramel and chocolate? You already look like you want to devour her, and having eaten her pussy once, I’d die for the chance to do it again. She won’t break her promise. I told you, I trust her. And she’s in heat. This is what you’ve dreamed about for years, being with me and having an Omega. And look, twoof them. They’re both my pack. Theyclaimedme. Isn’t that male one fucking adorable? He even has freckles, which I know is a thing for you.”
Both Cricket and I blush.
But then, so does Tor.
“You’re never going to learn that it’s all about the mystery, are you?” Tor snatches the phone from me.
Chase is yelling on the other end.
Spellbound by finding my scent match, I’d forgotten that I has halfway through a conversation.
Jin winks at me. “It’ll be fine. Charming can, well, charm anyone.”
Tor places the phone to his ear. “Am I talking to this precious Omega’s brother? First, let me assure you that I will keep her safe through her heat…” Tor stutters to a stop, paling. I don’t know what my brother is saying to him, but it’s something frightening enough to make Tor cast me a shocked and impressed glance. “Well, that’s graphic and creative. I didn’t even know you could do that…ouch, painful. I get the message. To be fair, you’re the one who let her attend a concert, when she was close to her heat.”
I wince at the same time as Tor does.
The wrong word there waslet.
My brother doesn’tletme do anything. Tor is clearly being scolded about that right now.
“It came on early,” I grumble.
“It must have been your closeness to your scent match, my Queen.” Jin climbs onto the bed, wrapping his arms around me. I rest my head on his shoulder. It’s incredible how right this feels. “I’ve worked in enough venues to know that ventilators take scents away but they can’t remove our biological reactions or underlying pheromones. Your body recognized it enough to draw on a heat.”
I become ashen.
It’s rare for heats to be triggered by meeting scent matches and only happens when the match is an extremely powerful one.
The heats that they create can be unstable, extreme, and sometimes even deadly.
Cricket casts me a worried glance.
I’m not going to tell him about the dangers of the heat. It’s Jin’s and his first experience of one, and I want it to be positive.
