“When I need your opinion, I will ask for it, Rune.”
The warrior’s chuckles followed him out into the hall of their spaceship.
Korben shook his head. Did Rune think he lacked that much self-control? Neh. He had spent sun cycles resisting all urges and he would continue to do so…
His thoughts screeched to a halt as Ga Eun appeared in front of him, a smile on her pink lips. She pointed to a room sectioned off behind a curtain and said, “She’s waiting for you in there.”
Korben nodded.
“Don’t worry about the curtains. We will beallthe way on the other side of the spaceship tonight. We won’t hear a thing.”
Heat flared in his chest. “Thank you for taking care of her.”
“It was my pleasure.” She strode toward him, her dark eyes hard as flint. “Your mate is a sweet girl. If you hurt her…” Ga Eun lowered her voice to a threatening whisper, “I will hunt you down.”
His lips twitched. Were all human females this fiery?
“Understood.” He turned swiftly and pushed the curtains aside, stepping into the dark room.
It had been a heavy day of discoveries. His brother’s life was at stake and Sah-ah potentially having Plutonian blood made the possibilities endless. She could control Enthara. She could unlock every precious item he owned with bio-tech.
And she could carry his brood.
Korben did not want to make a choice between his brother and his female, neither did he want to commit a vile act against another human. But those decisions could wait until the morning. He would spend his last night unable to speak to Sah-ah in peace and he would hope like crazy that he never had to make such a cruel and impossible choice.
Twenty-One
Sara
Ga Eun was hiding something, but she wasn’t about to pry. The woman had opened her home to them. If she wanted to keep a few things private, so be it. Sara turned in the bed, her body sinking into the soft pads hidden beneath the blankets. Her eyes fell on the empty space where Korbenshouldbe.
She was clean, freshly clothed and in a comfortable bed for the first time in what felt like years, yet her mind still couldn’t quiet down and her body longed for Korben’s warmth. She’d only known him for a short time, but she already couldn’t fall asleep without him.
That was the beginning of insanity, wasn’t it?
Sara looked at the empty space beside her. All night, thoughts of Korben had simmered in the back of her mind. He was always there, almost like a presence. Like an obsession. But how could she not be obsessed?
He protected her.
He put himself in harm’s way for her.
Other women had fallen in love with men who did way less.
But he isn’t a man.
Good point.
He was an alien. Another species entirely.
And what if he didn’t rescue you? What if he kidnapped you to hand you over to the Heronas?
Another good point.
And one she couldn’t prove. Asking Korben directly was out of the picture. She could ask Ga Eun to interpret, but that didn’t appeal. She wanted Korben to open his mouth and explain to her in words she could understand. She wanted to look him in the eyes when he answered.
Had he betrayed her?
Would he?
