"I know." Allie sniffles. "But-but that's only the tip of the iceberg. Two days ago, when I got home from grocery shopping, I unlocked my door to find the apartment totally in shambles. It looked like the whole place had been ransacked but nothing was missing, it was just trashed, everything was broken or ruined, even Daisy's bassinet." She stifles a sob and picks at her napkin. "I'm pretty sure it was Jeff but I don't know."
"Why do you think it was him?" I really hope it was because at least that weasel would've only done it to scare Allie and not threaten her like another crazy dragon.
"He's been livid over the fact that I wouldn't give him his ring back. I told him I pawned it because it was mine and since he wasn't going to help me raise my baby I used the money for her. I'm pretty sure he thought I was lying so he used his key and tossed the apartment to look for it."
"And since he didn't find it because you did actually pawn it, he got pissed enough to evict you," I growl. What a cocksucker.
Allie nods. "And then this morning, maybe like two hours after my landlord showed up with the notice, I got papers in the mail..." she sniffles really hard and drops her eyes to her lap. "He had his parental rights revoked. Jeff gave up any connection he had to Daisy and made it official."
"Bastard," Grace growls.
Casey nods. "He is a huge bastard but it's probably for the best. He was going to be a shit father anyway."
"I know." Allie wipes her nose. "He never wanted Daisy, didn't even want me to keep her but I wasn't going to give her up, not for anything."
"Which was the best decision ever." I kiss Daisy's wispy blonde hair. "She's the only good that came from that relationship."
"I know that too, and even though Jeff has pretty much done everything he can to ruin my life, when I went to leave a little while ago, I found something even scarier on my windshield."
I share a look with Grace and Casey, both of them probably thinking something similar—that it wasn't Jeff depending on what she found.
"What happened next, honey?" I'm trying so hard to be gentle because Allie is so upset but now I'm worried for all kinds of reasons.
"When I got to my car there was some kind of weird knife stabbed into my windshield with a note under it. I have no idea what it says because it's not in English and it shocks the hell out of me Jeff was able to even get it through the glass in the first place."
"Do you still have the note?" God I hope she does. "And the knife?"
Allie nods and goes for the diaper bag, and what she pulls out makes my blood run cold.
It's not a knife.
Nope.
It's a dagger.
A dagger just like the ones Henrich has been analyzing; a dagger with the Molnarva crest branded into it.
Grace looks at me, worry flashing in those gray eyes before she takes the dagger and note.
I give Daisy Mae back to her mama and take the aged, crumpled paper.
Thank god I seem to be able to all of the sudden read Slovakian.
This mating thing is amazing.
My king and queen,
You will not be able to hide from us forever, you will not be able to save everyone. We know where your clan lives, where they work, where they play. It is only a matter of time before we eliminate all you hold dear and when we do, your heads will be next.
Best regards,
Cyril
"What does it say?"Allie asks while whipping out a boob to feed Daisy.
I shake my head and lie my ass off. "I don't know, honey, but we'll figure it out."
Grace and Casey both look at me but I just shrug and hope they get my message.
