“Why?” I frown. “That was my plan.”
“I figured, but Sam and Zak will know. All of the guys have a weird sixth sense sort of thing about their vehicles and they’d know before we were even out of the driveway. Do you have anyone you can call?”
I give her theUhm, you know I don’tlook but then get an idea. “I can try.” Ember and Elias should be off work but awake still, and I know for a fact that they’ll help. It’s just a matter of getting a hold of them.
“Good.” Harlow nods. “I’ll distract Sam. He knows I gag every time Willa shits up her back, and if I tell him Sof needs assistance he’ll go running.”
“And we can watch the hall to make sure you’re clear.” Summer grins. “Theo is going to be so fucking pissed at us, but oh well. She went in guns blazing when Zak was in trouble, she’d be a hypocrite if she didn’t expect you to do the same.”
That is a really solid point.
One I didn’t think of and will definitely throw in my sister’s face when she starts giving me hell over this.
Mind made up, I start blowing up Ember and Elias as Summer and Jolie casually make their way to the hall under the guise ofa little make out session to help lessen their worry about Jackal and ease the tension, and Harlow texts Sam.
He then comes clomping through the living room, past the kitchen and up the stairs just a few minutes later.
Perfect.
“Go,” Harlow whispers. “Hurry. Get outside and wait for your ride, but text when you’re in the car.”
I nod as I grab my purse and double check I have the taser and pepper spray Fin gave me months ago. I hurry to the laundry room but stop just before heading to the garage door. “Thank you.”
Harlow smiles. “No need, babe. Our men might be our world, but we girls gotta stick together, too. The MC life is hard and we’re all we got, so we have to do everything we can to make sure we keep all of us together.” Then she bites her lip, a little worry creeping into her smile. “Tell Mitch I love him, yeah? And that if he comes home relatively unharmed, I’ll do that thing with his balls that he likes.” I try my hardest to keep the horror out of my expression as I agree, but Harlow just laughs. “He’ll know what I mean, and if you’re curious I’d be happy to tell you. I’m sure Spider would appreciate it.”
“At the rate he’s going, I won’t be playing with Fin’s balls or anything else for a long time.”
She cracks up. “In the doghouse. I can get on board with that.”
“Thank you, Harlow. Really. And I’ll be sure to tell Mitch, ok?”
My friend nods then shoos me away before giving me a smile.
Then I’m out the door as fast as I can, through the garage and running to the street where Ember and Elias are already—miraculously—waiting for me.
Fin is definitely in the doghouse, but I still love him.
He’s my soulmate, my future and my forever, and I will fight alongside him in order to ensure all of that for both of us.
And I’ll do it whether he likes it or not.
CHAPTERTWENTY-ONE
FIN
I swearto Christ I’m being punished.
I’m sure I deserve it, I know I do to some extent, but considering the circumstances and the motives behind my current situation, I really thought whatever higher power is out there would cut me a fucking break until I bring James home.
He did not.
“No, no, no. See, the painting isn’t really alive, it’s a vessel.”
I take a deep breath and refrain from punching the dashboard, repeating my mantra—the one I learned in my twelve step program:this too shall pass.
“Vigo basically possessed the painting of himself in order to travel the world and ultimately end up in a position to prey on a weak-minded twat like Janosz,” Victor explains. “That’s why they have to use the positively charged pink ooze on it.”
“I don’t know, man,” Marbles says skeptically. “I always thought that fucking thing was alive and that guy was trapped inside. Not possessing it or what the fuck ever.”
