Which is why I don’t. Instead, I push down my anxiety and fear, shift my focus, and let my adrenaline take over. “Let’s move.”

Then we are.

The six of us are running, darting through the doors out into the yard, zig-zagging amongst the shadows as we move toward building A.

Stealthy and quiet.

Quickly and with purpose.

We run until we’re a mere six feet away before the first shot rings out, and when it does, it’s all I can do not to shift on the spot.

“He’s mine.” Andrej whips past us, the bulky son of a bitch faster than I expected, and as we take a split second to watch, he shocks me with what he does.

The eldest dragon runs like lightning toward the new watch tower made of ply wood, scales it in less than a handful of movements, then proceeds to nearly twist the head right off the guard before dropping his lifeless body on the ground below.

Clearly, Andrej wasn’t kidding about the nickname.

But I’ll admire him for it later.

Right now, we need to get inside before that shot brings on more, before the buildings are put into lockdown and we become sitting ducks out here in the open yard.

“Stay safe, Luna,” Ronny says as he bows then presses a kiss to my temple. “You too, Alpha.”

He bows to Colton as my mate does the same. “You come back missing anything you leave with, I’ll kick your ass myself, Beta.”

Our nephew just grins, gives Zan and Frankie a finger salute, then takes off toward the back of the building, shifting just before we lose sight of him.

“I suppose we should hurry as well.” The demon looks to his mate before both of them turn to us. “The young wolf is about to make one hell of an entrance and I fear our cover will be blown because of it.”

The unspoken words stretch between the four of us but they’re understood, their meaning loud and clear, and after forced smiles and unnecessary good byes, Zan and Frankie quickly make their way to the opposite side of the building.

Dear gods in The After, please keep us all safe.

“Ready?” Colton asks as we both look to the right of building A.

“I’m so fucking ready.”

“Let’s go then, Birdie. We dick around too long and that fierce look on your face mixed with the determination roaring through our bond, and I might just have to take you up against the wall before we go inside.”

“Later.” I smile as I start to jog toward the corner. “Once we’re home and everyone is accounted for. That’s when you can…” The hair on the back of my neck stands on end as we round the side of the building, a familiar scent filling my nostrils and causing my wolf to growl deep and low.

“Birdie?”

Nose in the air, I sniff several times before I quickly make my way toward the door, throwing it open without an ounce of hesitation.

“Lark,” Colton hisses as he follows me inside. “Lark, what—”

“It’s Dick.” The ripple of anger that rockets through our bond is so intense it has me swaying on my feet, but only briefly before it grounds me. “Dickandthe doc.”

Without uttering a word, my mate and I both shift in record time, our wolves more than happy to take control in order to hunt their prey. We don’t speak at all after that either, not through our wolves, and not through our link. The emotions we’re both experiencing are more than enough, and my sister wolf knows both scents well enough to let them guide us exactly where we need to be.

We climb to the top floor where Kentworth’s office is, not coming across one person along the way, and while that’s a little unnerving, it’s also not completely uncommon in this part of the facility.

The doc likes his solitude, likes having silence and peace when he’s looking over his research and planning his next steps. And if he’s been eliminating people since I left, I imagine he’s had a lot of things to think about. Like how he can continue his genocidal schemes with so few species left to wipe out.

Nose to the ground, my wolf stays focused on finding the two we specially came back for even though it’s obvious where they’ll be.

If the doc got wind of our intrusion, or if Dick was notified about whatever Andrej is doing outside, he’ll have quickly taken Kentworth to his office as a precaution before using his own personal escape route.
