Colton barks out his anger then follows it with a warning growl and sharp snap of his teeth.

My mate is pissed.

Supported further when he begins pacing toward them slowly, keeping himself between us as he boxes in Dick and the doc.

“A daughter,” I huff. “What, like your daughter, the one of your flesh and blood that youmurdered, that you dissected and experimented on long before you started annihilating entire species?”

Kentworth shakes his head, his gaze locked on my mate in a way I don’t like. “I tried to help her. I tried to help all of you, I’ve dedicated my life to it. This affliction is—”

My Alpha barks a few more times, Colt finally losing his patience and lunging at the insane men a few feet away, but before I can stop him, before I can do anything at all, Dick fires three rounds into my mate then his gun jams.

“Colton!” I cry out as he drops to the floor. “No…” Tears well in my eyes as I try to reach for him, only now realizing my legs won’t move and they tingle as if they’re asleep.Colton, honey, please!I send through our link with no response.

“Well, I’ll be damned.” Dick slowly lowers his weapon as he inches toward my alpha. “This big bastard”—he nudges him with his boot—“isyour mate.”

“Colton…” A tear rolls down my cheek, the first one I have ever shed in front of either of these men, and I lean, still trying to get my body to move.

Please, gods, don’t take him from me.

Kentworth peers around Dick and scans us in a way I don’t even have to see to decipher. “Is that true,Zitkala? This male is your mate?”

“Yes,” I whisper as the armed asshole laughs out, “Bullshit.”

I ignore him and let my eyes travel the length of the big beautiful beast before us; his glossy reddish-brown fur, his body like a finely tuned machine. My mate is gorgeous as a man and a wolf, and…oh my gods.

“He hasn’t shifted.” Kentworth voices my thoughts before I’ve barely formed them. “The morphine and wolves bane should have only forced a shift, not laid him out like this.”

While that explains why I feel the way I do, it doesn’t explain much of anything else and it most definitely offers no explanation as to why my mate is still in his wolf form. He might be an alpha, and larger than most wolves, but three shots should have donesomethingto Colton other than knock him out.

But as I ignore the doctor’s babbling and continue to stare at the shallow breathing of the beautiful beast, the most unusual thing happens.

Colt’s wolf begins to twitch, the powerful muscles in his body start to contract and roll under his fur. His paws jerk against the linoleum and his head tries to lift. And there, right before my eyes, the specially crafted bulletspushthemselves from the wolf’s body and hit the floor with one, then two and three softtings.

“Good lord…” Kentworth gasps as he takes a step backward, his gaze fixed on Colton. “I’ve never… I’ve never seen anything like this before.”

Just wait.

Because that recognition, that dark familiarity, is leaping to life under my skin, and I have a pretty strong feeling my mate is about to blow this man’s mind.

Colt’s wolf continues to stir, keeps moving and twitching until he lurches forward then quickly gets to his feet. He looks around briefly, our link dormant and fuzzy, and when his big head swings toward Dick, that’swhen my suspicions are confirmed.

His eyes are silver.

My mate’s wolf has silver eyes and that means—

I jump as he howls, the sound a combination of Colt’s wolf and theother, and when he snaps his teeth at the petrified guard, silver smoke erupts from his body.

I shield my eyes the best I can at the small explosion, leaning away from the monster that’s clearly making himself known, but when I hear the most blood curdling scream I have ever bared witness to, I force myself to look just in time to come face to bloody face with theother.

Who promptly drops Dick’sheadin my lap.

I blink about forty times, my bewildered stare fixed on the look of horror cemented on the bastard’s stupid face. “You… you…” Slowly, I meet theother’sexpectant expression, wincing a little when he chuffs so closely I can feel his putrid breath on my lips. “You killed him. You killed him, for me?”

Theotherchuffs again before he nudges the decapitated head in my lap but before I can do anything else, the monster spins toward a sound behind him.

The sound of Kentworth pressing the kill switch just before he slips through a quickly closing door in the bookshelf behind his desk.

Shit.
