With a menacing growl, theothermoves to go after him but I stop the demonic wolf instead.
“We have to go,” I say in a shaky voice as I attempt to get to my feet. “We have to find the others and get out of here.” Theotherturns to face me, the creature growling in what I can only assume is annoyance before I narrow my eyes at it. “There’s no time. That son of a bitch just put the entire facility into self destruct mode, and if I remember correctly, we have twenty minutes before the buildings start to explode from the ground up.”
Theothergrowls at me again and I roll my eyes as I grab onto the chair and pull myself to stand. “I’m sure there will be plenty of people you can kill on the way, and regardless of how badly I’d like for you to shred the doc the same way you did Dick, our clan has now become the priority.”
Our clan?
What the hell am I saying?
Just because I seem to have some semblance of control over this monster does not mean he’s suddenly docile and should be made a member of the Dragovihk clan like the rest of us.
Even if he did kill for me then present me with the head—which hedoes notwant me leaving behind judging by the look he’s giving me—like a cat would a mouse.
And when did I stop referring to this thing asit?
Whatever.
I can’t put too much thought into any of that now because I’m still struggling to move and we’re on the top floor of a building that is going to blow up within minutes.
“You have to help me,” I grunt as I grab Dick’s hair and hold his skull tightly in my fist. “I can’t move quick enough and—”
Theotherimmediately comes to my aid, his massive body leaning into mine before he essentially throws me over his back. Which gives me a great view of the rest of the bastard who made years of my life a living hell, a tiny bit of satisfaction hitting me right in the chest as I see arms and legs scattered about and Dick’s torso nothing more than a bloody pile of goo.
This evil creature is a very quick and efficient killing machine, there is no doubt about that.
But I’ll process that and all the other fucked up shit going on in my head later. Much later when we’re back on clan territory, safe and already planning our next steps to get Kentworth.
Fast and deadly silent, theotherCarrie’s me through the broken door, down the hall stops at the stairs.
“Find the demon,” I grunt, my body dangling over his, my bare stomach up against his coarse fur as I try to hang on. “Find the demon, then we’ll find the others.”
Then he’s off.
Theothertears down the stairs to the floor below, complete chaos happening around us and providing enough of a distraction that none of the screaming nurses seem to notice the humongous evil wolf running amongst them.
We pass the cell blocks and head straight for the lab, smoke and fire popping up in random places as we go, and after a few minutes we finally see Zan and Frankie—outside the hospital wing that is completely engulfed in flames.
“No!” Zan yells at his mate as she wraps her shirt around his thigh. “No, I will not allow it!”
Frankie quickly ties off what must be a makeshift bandage before she turns a pleading look toward him. “I can hear the baby, Zan. He’s still alive in there and I’m not leaving this property without him.”
The demon reaches out and grabs her by the wrist, tugging the female toward him just as Ronny’s wolf appears at the other end of the hall. “I will not allow it! You cannot—damn!” He cries out as he grips his thigh, a large pool of silvery blood appearing under the white cotton material. “Damn this entire place to The End! You cannot go after the young, Frankie, not when we have mere minutes to evacuate ourselves.”
His mate pushes him against the wall, her eyes filling with warmth as she quickly leans in and gives him a kiss. “I love you.” Then Frankie spins around and runs toward the burning hospital.
“Frankie!” Zan and I both yell as Ronny comes flying toward us,I got herringing through my head as his wolf detours and chases after the woman none of us will easily live without.
The demon tries—and fails—to follow, his leg giving out from under him before I realize Zan is covered in injuries.
“Go to him,” I tell theother. “Get him on his feet so we’re ready.”
And he does.
The evil monster follows my command without hesitation, shouldering Zan into a standing position and leaning against him to both prevent him from following his mate and provide assistance.
Seconds tick by slowly as we wait for Ronny and Frankie to appear. The screaming and shouting fade into white noise as we watch the open doorway, Zan’s hand on my back, his other gripping theother’s mangy fur tightly. We focus all of our attention on the hospital, myself praying to the gods that my nephew gets them out safely, and as those seconds turn to minutes, my heart begins pounding out of my chest.
Please. Please, let them return to us.
