“I would bring you with me, but my parents will ask, and I will not lie. But I want you here. I don’t know what is happening. Emergency gatherings like this are rarely called.”
“You know I can’t be hurt, right?” News flash, he was worried again. Color me shocked.
“I know, but that doesn’t change my instincts. I have to protect you, Caleb. I need to know where you are. If something is truly wrong and I have to leave, I need to know where you are and how to get you because I will not leave without you.”
“If that did happen and I wasn’t here, you should trust that I can and will take care of myself.”
“Caleb.”
“Zoltilvoxfyn,” I groaned. “Trust me. I have wandered for a long time. I’ve seen all manner of shocking thingsout there. Trust that I would find you because I would. No matter the distance, no matter the struggle, no matter the circumstance, I would find you. I will never leave you.”
He leaned closer, his lips near mine. “I do trust you, my Caleb, but I must keep you safe.”
I fell headlong into the pressing desire to feel at least resistance. I forced all of my attention onto my mouth. Going up on my toes, I pressed my lips against his and met a tangible force stopping me.
I felt nothing from the contact, but when he gasped, against me, a deep, molten sensation like lava moving beneath the crust of the Earth burned me, and for all of one second, there was the smoothness of his lips and scent of… something earthen or dirt-like, soil maybe, on his scales before it faded. But ithadbeen there. I hadn’t smelled anything in so long, all memory was gone. I couldn’t have made that up.
The resistance faded, and I slid through him.
Fyn brushed my cheek, but his fingers disappeared. “What was that, my Mate?”
“If I focus as hard as possible, I can touch something for a moment.” With a surreptitious glance, I saw my hands were vanishing. It wouldn’t be too long until I disappeared, which Fynwould not enjoy. God. He was going to freak the fuck out.Great job, Caleb. I never think shit through. But, hey, I touched him, even if it was only for a moment.
He pressed his fingers to his lips. “Thank you.”
I grinned as brightly as possible and ushered him out of the bedroom. He needed to get the hell out of here before I disappeared. Thankfully, I should reappear before he got back from his meeting.
“Go. You’re late.”
“I need you to wait here, Caleb. I have to know you’re safe,” he said, stepping into the living room. “You are the most important thing in my life.”
Hands behind my back, I said, “I will be right here. But for some odd reason, if I’m not, don’t panic. I will always come back to you.”
My Sunshine frowned something deep as he remained rooted in the same spot like a damn tree. “Why would you leave?”
Already my feet and arms were beginning to vanish. It wouldn’t take much more for Fyn to notice. “Fine,” I said. “I will wait right here. In fact, I will wait in your bed.”
“Our bed.”
An unstoppable smile spread over my lips. “Our bed. I expect sex when you get back.”
His fingers brushed my cheek. “Insatiable.”
“Yep.”
“Fine, I will leave.”
When he turned toward the door, I rushed to the bedroom. I poked my head through the door to watch him leave. At the last moment, Fyn turned around.
“I would do anything for you, Fyn. Anything,” I said, and shit, I meant it. I would do whatever needed to be done to stay with him. I would sacrifice my own soul to stay beside Fyn and keep him smiling, even if it was only for one more day.
With one last look, he left.
I slid back into the bedroom, standing on the other side of the door, and lifted my hands, but they were gone. I was disintegrating. I tried to curl my fingers, and for a moment, they wrapped around something soft or maybe smooth or silky, I didn’t know, but it vanished so quickly I wasn’t certain which it was—this was all new to me.
“Please don’t let me be gone long,” I begged the universe. “I had to kiss him at least once.”
My last thought before the darkness stole me was of my Fyn.
