“Yes.”

She sits forward with wide eyes. “What? How—how is she?”

“She’s not doing well.”

“What do you mean she’s not doing well? Is she sick? Is she in trouble?” she rushes out genuinely concerned for our sister.

“She’s gotten herself into some heavy stuff.”

“What, like drugs?” I nod my head. “She’s always dabbled in some stuff here and there.”

“Not like this. She’s going to kill herself if we don’t get out there.”

“Okay, right. Yes, let’s go.”

“I need you to talk to Mamma. It has to be all of us.”

She gives me this wistful look that I can’t face. “Okay. I’ll make sure we’re all there.” She stands up. “Massimo.” I look up at her. “Thank you.”

“Don’t thank me,” I murmur.

“Why not? You’re showing you care, and I know it isn’t easy for you. For any of us. We’re not like…the Bonetti’s.”

I never told anyone else other than Ezzo about the property I bought in Italy and the family vacation that obviously never happened. Once the dust settles, I’d like to rectify that.

“Thank Alessia. She’s the one who talked me into going to get her.”

She smiles and nods her head. “I’ll be sure to thank her.”

“I want to be leaving in the next hour.”

“Got it. I’ll see you later after I round up the troops.”

She takes her leave, and I go back to looking at the facility I plan to put Vita in as soon as we get back. I’ll have to put some guards on her there to be safe, but it looks like it’s the best one on the East Coast.

Since we’ll all be out the entire day, I decided it was time for a family reunion for the Bonetti’s. Not only will they occupy Alessia while I’m away, but it’ll increase the chances of her not escaping. I have Tullio’s word that they will not give in and let her leave with them.

Alessia was not at all pleased, as I thought she would be when I told her. She was visibly anxious and uncomfortable. I think she’s somewhat apprehensive about finally facing everyone, especially her mother. Again, she showed a sliver of remorse.

Only wish I received the same treatment.

Chapter forty-seven

Alessia

The family reunion is emotional asfuck.

Gemma and Mamma erupted into tears as soon as they embraced me. Between hugs and kisses and sobs, they peppered me with questions and accusations.

“Why did you have to get yourself into trouble?”

“We were supposed to be laying low.”

“Did you get involved with another family?”

“Were you trying to get yourself killed?”

“I knew something would happen with you living out in the middle of the desert by yourself.”
