I should move away when she turns toward me, but anticipation holds me frozen in place. “And thank you, too, Devin.” Her lips are warm. Soft. I physically ache for more.
If I don’t speak now, will I ever be able to tell her what’s in my heart? “Kendall, sweets, I need… need to tell you something.”
Josh slips from the hood. “I’ll just?—”
“Stay.” The word is a desperate command and I soften my voice. “Please stay. You need to hear this, too.”
Instead of returning to his place, he movesaround the vehicle so he stands between Keni and me. “What’s up, hon? You’ve been… off lately.”
I could talk my way around this for hours and never get to the point. Is it better just to spit out the words and see what happens? I choose the instant reaction. “Josh told you about how we’d talked about the possibility of adding a woman to our relationship?”
She nods but offers no other encouragement.
“And that he wanted it to be you? Because he loves you?”
Now she smiles with her nod. “Works out good since I love him, too.”
“You’ve always been my friend…”
She covers my mouth with her fingers. I curl my lips inward to keep from doing something stupid. “Devin, this sounds like the start of a break up.” She presses the back of her hand dramatically to her forehead. “An ‘it’s not you, it’s me’ speech.” Serious again, she holds my gaze. “You’re not going to say anything like that, are you?”
That might be easier. But… no. I continue where I left off when she interrupted. “And I was willing to accept you as the third of our throuple. Then something changed.”
“What?”
“I fell in love with you.”
Confusion mars her beautiful face. “That doesn’t make sense. Shouldn’t that make everything easier?”
“It should. But you’ve just learned about Josh’s feelings. Adding mine might be too much.”
“Listen buster. I get to say when something is too much.”
“And I don’t want to intrude on your time with Josh.”
She plants one hand at her hips. “Didn’t we establish that you wanted to be with us this morning? And that I wanted you there. Because… well, if it’s confession time, I’ve fallen for you, too.”
Josh leans over the car hood in between us. “Fuck. You two are in love, too?”
“Don’t be mad.”
“Darlin’, how could I ever be mad when the two people I love most in the world are also in love with each other. This is the best.”
He grabs my shoulders and kisses me hard, then repeats the action with Keni. “I love you both. So fucking much. I was sick of holding everything in. Now we don’t have to. I love you, Keni. I love you, Devin.”
Keni slaps her hand over Josh’s mouth. “Shut upfor a bit, will you please?” She waits until he nods before removing her hand.
“So to sum everything up… Josh loves Devin and me. Devin loves Josh and me. I love Josh and Devin. We all want…” She scoots closer to me. “You do want to add sex to this discussion, don’t you? Because I sure do.”
“Yes, I desire you,” I say softly although the words are loud in the quiet night.
“This isn’t just because of Josh, is it? You thinking you want me?”
“It’s not. If I can only be with you when he’s there, I can be content. But you need to know this, Kendall. I want you along with Josh as the three of us make love together. I also desire the opportunities to be alone with you. Just as I long for time alone with Josh. What I feel isn’t all or nothing. I want every bit, every part. Every option.”
Josh takes my hand. “Sounds perfect, hon. You’ve put my thoughts into words.” Then he lifts Keni’s hand to his lips. “How does all this loving sound to you, darlin’?”
“Yes, perfect,” she sighs. “It will be fabulous.”
