I figured he would need it.

Halfway across Central Park from Enzo—and already regretting the walk in designer shoes—I got a text. This time from Marcus.
We need to talk. Dinner at Alder & Vine, at seven?
he asked.
I knew Alder & Vine was an exceedingly upscale restaurant. Was he…planning on breaking up with me in public?
Or had he reserved a whole room, so that he could bring his lawyer, and could ceremonially burn our pre-nup in front of me?
Either way—maybe someone had unwittingly gotten me out of this mess.
And who knew—depending on how tonight went, and whatever Rhaim had planned—they might’ve just saved Marcus’s life.
I’ll be there.
I texted back, and then texted Rio,
Where’s my dad right now?
Corvo.
I found the nearest street sign, triangulating where I was, what I needed, and how fast I could get it.
Can you two stay there for ninety minutes?
Yeah
Rio texted back.
And I’ll tell you if we go anywhere.
Thanks.
I told him, and then started heading back to one of the stores Arnold had put a card down for me with.
I needed to do a spot of shopping first.

“All right,” Sable said, after we went through our plan.
This time our late lunch was on me—at one of the cafes embedded into the first floor of a building down the street from Corvo, where the echoing voices of everyone ordering and chatting were as good as a fountain’s worth of white noise.
She finished half her sandwich, then handed over a white shopping bag. “These phones are pristine. So you don’t go open them up and turn them on till you’re good and gloved up—maybe even with a hair bonnet and a face mask on.”
I gave her a look. “What, you think I’ve never done this before?”
She rolled her eyes. “I just don’t want you to get caught.”
“How could I? When everyone on my team is so amazing?” I teased.
