I will win in the end.
“That’s right, angel.” Langston chucks my nose like I’m a little kid. “Now, go make yourself look pretty.”
Because my wavy, auburn hair, green eyes, and slim body are not whatprettyis made of.
“Yes, sir.”
I rise from the floor and kiss his cheek. Oddly enough, this simple act taught me how to control my gag reflex. While probably an attractive man in his prime, Langston is not a silver fox—nor does he have a fantastic personality.
I’m not saying men need a six-pack of abs and a lush head of hair, but I think they at least need to have a caring and compassionate personality. Langston is lacking in all regards—except for money.
But money means nothing, in my opinion.
I’ve seen first-hand how money corrupts good men, controls families, and drives even the most honest men to commit evil deeds—like breaking up a family.
I had a family once.
But it’s been years since I’ve spoken his name aloud.
Because we were reckless.
We were in love.
And we set off the biggest scandal Texas had ever seen.
But like all great love stories, it ended in tragedy.
No one finds their soulmate at five years old.
And no one loses him thirteen years later.
Money and power created a weakness in my father. And my scandal provided him the solution—teaching me that life is but a series of moments. Nothing lasts forever. Not relationships. Not love. And indeed, not loyalty.
But hope—that’s the one constant you can count on.
Hope for a chance to make things right.
Hope for one more moment when I can see him again—to tell him I’m sorry.
“Ramsey!”
Langston’s fingers snap in front of my face, and I straighten. “I’m sorry, I just—”
Those beady eyes that transform into something kinder while in front of a crowd, narrow. “You’re ignoring me. Get out of my face before my good mood dissipates.”
Offering him a tight smile, I step back out of his reach.
I am a willing prisoner in a world I hate.
All because I made a mistake—a mistake that ruined my life.
Fortunately for Langston, that mistake ensures my compliance. I’ll suffer through the bastard’s wrath with a smile for a bit longer.
Because Langston Albrecht took something from me, and I won’t rest until I get it back.
