I shook my head, laying it on his back. “Whatever you say, my big, bad wolf.”
Chapter Thirty-Two
Hawke
Allthroughoutthejourneynorth, my wolf paced incessantly. The dust continued to fly behind us as we pushed the distance between us and the city as we traveled further and further away. No amount of distance would be enough to get my mate away from the danger I had put her in.
How the fuck did they find us?
I was so elated to be with my mate, I was unable to recognize the peril due to my overwhelming lust. For a week, I kept her hidden in the town where her stepbrother waited and watched for who knew how damn long.
And I trusted Bram to be on the lookout when I shouldn’t have. I should have taken more responsibility and not relied on him so heavily.
But hell, without his warning, we would have been screwed.
He was a warlock, a powerful one at that, but he was only half the warlock he once was since his rejection. I trusted him too much. I should have—
“Just shut the hell up and concentrate on getting her somewhere safe,” my wolf snarled.“We did the best we could do. We claimed her, we got her to trust us, we completed our mission.”
“But now she thinks of us as weak.” My lip curled in disgust.“I should have killed them all in front of her. Show her how powerful we really are.”
“And have half the town show up? What if you were shot, and you continued to fight? That would be hard to explain. And if another supernatural caught wind? We would have been reported to the Council for killing humans.”
I let out an exasperated sigh of annoyance.
“She hasn’t seen me yet, either. When am I gonna come out? I haven’t stretched my legs in who knows how long. Let me out.”
“You whine too much. Why were you gifted to me?”
“Beats me. Why are you such a wet blanket?”my wolf huffed.
“Hawke?”Delilah sighed into the link.
I adjusted my posture, extending my arm behind me to place my hand on her thigh.
I had ignored her much of the trip. I didn’t intend to do so, but old habits died hard. I didn’t want her to feel my anger; I had to keep it bottled up and away from her. I was angry with myself. I never wanted her to see his face again, and I let it happen far too quickly when she was under my care.
“What is it? Are you getting tired?”I could feel her head gently pushing against my back in a sign of agreement.
We’d traveled late into the afternoon and covered a lot of ground. During our journey, we only stopped for gas, to quickly use the restroom, and grab something to eat. We were close to our destination, and then we would rest for several days. We were going to be so deep in the redwood forest, no one could find us there. Especially once Bram caught up with us. Then no human could track us.
“Her body is changing,” my wolf mumbled.
“What?”I snapped.
“Her body temperature is rising. In the next few days, maybe?”
“Is that normal?”
“The fuck if I know. I’ve never seen a human shift. Just our kind.”
Right.
I huffed in annoyance, accelerating as we drove deeper into the redwood forest.
Where we were going was off the path, away from the main road. We would have to kill the engine and walk the bike deeper into the forest.
There were many places all over earth where a supernatural could hide. Tiny veils, almost bubble-like areas that kept supernaturals hidden. No one knew who created these bubbles. Bram seemed to know where these bubbles were, the map he pulled from his curious box the night I told him about Grim and Journey showed me where the bubbles were located as we plotted our drive back to the Iron Fang.
