Once I returned, Delilah was already lightly snoring.
“She gave me a name,”my wolf snorted, prancing happily inside my head.
“She did not, you idiot. It was just a nickname. It isn’t normal to give out names, you know that.”
“Grim’s mate gave his wolf a name.”
“How do you know that?”I growled.
“Just because I was silent in your head doesn’t mean I couldn’t talk to another wolf,”he grumbled.
I took the cool cloth and ran it over my mate’s forehead. She was burning up, and I didn’t know if it was because of a human fever or because of her body changing.
I sighed heavily, my worries becoming too much to bear. I didn’t want to mess up, not again. I couldn’t after that stunt with her fucking ex-husband showing up.
My claws extended. I observed, with fascination, as the black nails glimmered in the fading light of the setting sun. I couldn’t wait to sink them into the bastard’s throat. I just hoped it was sooner rather than later.
“I think we should call our brothers,” my wolf mentioned. “Find out if Journey is alright.”
I responded with a nod, my nostrils flaring as I exhaled.
It was time. My mate was claimed. We were going home.
But I needed to know what to expect during her shift.
Because I knew she would not die.
I wouldn’t allow it.
Delilah
“This was just ingenious. I don‘t know why I didn’t do this before.”
There was clicking on the floor, which must have been the wooden planks of the cabin. The morning sun was rising higher in the sky, brightening the cabin’s interior. But I wasn’t ready to open my eyes.
“Leif, that big cave-wolf was right. Taking over when the human is sleeping was a good call. Who knows when Hawke would have let me out?”
My head pounded, my heart racing and my body trembling from the adrenaline coursing through me. I felt like I could lift a car and toss it a hundred yards.
It was making my stomach roll.
“I get to touch my mate with my own body. I can’t wait, can’t wait.”
I felt the air on my cheek. And then a gentle breeze from an open window brought cool relief over my sweaty skin.
Ahh, it felt nice.
I relaxed into the sheets. It smelled of Hawke, the forest, and those giant redwoods just outside the cabin. It was comforting being out in nature. I always preferred it more than the big city. In the small town where the Iron Fang was, I got a little of both. It was the best of both worlds.
A cold tap touched my nose.
“Oh shit! I touched her!”The sound of clicking and tapping on the floor echoed until it slowly dissipated. I felt the intensity of the sun‘s rays as they hit my face.
I was taken aback when I opened my eyes and felt the full force of the bright rays. I realized it must be much later than I had originally thought.
So, something was hovering over me, blocking the sun?
And there was something speaking earlier? It wasn’t a dream.
