“The humans working in the house, the females anyway, are left unharmed so far. Who knows what’s going to happen to them? We can’t get any more audio.”

“We need to get back out there,” I growled. “We need to rescue the rest.” It was part of our code. We rescued the weak and the fallen who were weaker than ourselves.

“And how do we exactly do that?” Locke scoffed as he leaned forward with his forearms on his knees. “A worthless leader who’s dying, a broken pack that can’t link. We are too weak as a whole to travel, to fight against an enemy across the country, Bear.” He threw his cigarette on the ground and stepped on it. “I know your mate wants to help. I wanted to ask her more questions before I went downhill. I wanted to get my ducks in a damn fucking row.” Locke’s voice rose as he stepped closer to me.

“But our time’s up,” he sneered. “We aren’t strong enough to save any of those women in there. The Goddess failed us once again. Surprise, surprise!” He threw his lighter to the far end of his cell. “Way to go, oh your supremeness!” He slung his head back. “Get our hopes up and then rip us apart when we believe in some shit. Can’t save others if we can’t even save ourselves.”

Locke ran to the bars and placed his hands on the silver. Black smoke rose from Locke’s hands as he grabbed the silver bars, his expression a mix of pain and rage. His eyes were wide with despair as I rushed to pull him away.

“Don’t you see? It doesn’t damn matter! Might as well kill me off now. Grim and Hawke will do a better job, anyway. My mind is nothing but Swiss cheese, can’t come up with a plan, can’t control my wolf…”

Bones rolled his eyes, grabbed a bag from his feet, and entered the cell. He was already pulling gauze and cream from his bag, and I forced Locke to sit down.

“You’re a damn idiot for an alpha,” I told him.

Locke glared at me and huffed.

Bones grabbed Locke’s wrists. “I know you got a kink for pain, but scaring up your hands is kinda fucked up. What’s your mate gonna think?” For the first time, I saw Bone’s eyes soften as he gently took care of Locke’s wounds.

“She ain’t coming. Why do you think I’m in this cell?” Locke whispered.

The room went quiet. No one seemed to know what to say to Locke. Pretty sure they all thought the same. Why wouldn’t his mate be here by now?

These experimental shots could only go so far. Where was Journey through all this? Could she give us any help, any glimpse into the future?

I stood back and let Bones wrap Locke’s hands, and I wiped my forehead. I may not be able to help Locke, but we could get some help with the women at the mansion. That would put Locke at ease with something.

“Listen… I know I’ve been out of it, taking care of my mate, but I’ve been in contact with my sleuth, and they found the fae clan that Nadia’s parents are from.”

Everyone in the room stared at me.

“Maybe they can help us with the women at the mansion.”

Hawke slapped his hand on his thigh. “And now you bring that shit up? You didn’t even tell us you were looking for them!”

“I’ve been concentrating on taking care of my mate’s demonic entity in her head. Sorry if it slipped my mind.” I pulled out my phone to pull up the messages. “I haven’t even told Nadia. I didn’t want to get her hopes up. I didn’t even know if they would be alive.” I chuckled. “But they are. Most of the clan is.”

Grim and Hawke came into the cell, Locke pushed Bones away, and they all gathered around my phone to see the messages.

The clan wasn’t in Russia anymore. They had moved themselves to Canada, staying mostly north and far away from civilizations. I hadn’t talked to them much directly; they kept their communication to a minimum.

“How many are there?” Beretta asked.

I shrugged my shoulders. “I don’t know, but they are coming. All of them.”

“All of them?” Sizzle growled. “How the hell are we going to keep our operations down to a minimum if we have an ass load of fae coming into town? Are their ears going to be showing? Are they going to be wearing some weird ass shit?” Sizzle’s eyes narrowed, flames dancing in his eyes.

“Calm down,” Locke snapped at Sizzle. “We may need this.” He pointed his finger at me. “You should have told us this sooner, Bear, but this might help those people at the mansion.”

Hawke held up his hands. “Now hold on there, Locke. These fae have been hiding for years. They aren’t just going to jump into some rescue mission. I’m surprised they are even coming here. What did you tell them to get them here?”

“Told them I knew of a way to get rid of bonding sickness and heard that there was a couple there that had it. A human and a fae pairing. That got their attention. I then explained I knew of a child and I knew their child’s whereabouts. The entire clan is coming because there are more pairings within the clan.”

Beretta smiled. “Well, I be damned. Looks like we have more members joining the club then. When is their ETA?”

I let out a choked laugh, rubbing my neck. “A few days or so. Guess we better get some apartments ready.”
