“I know.” An impish grin spread across his face as he winked. Sinjin had the most expressive winks.
“You’re an idiot,” I said, shaking my head and laughing, then I turned, silently asking him to zip me up in the back.
“I bet you’ll make the most beautiful bride in bridal history.” Well, that was a really sweet thing to say.
“Seeing as you’re standing in front of me in a tux, I already know you’d make the most handsome groom. A girl would be lucky to have you waiting at the end of the aisle for her.” A thoughtful look crossed over his face, one I didn’t fully understand until I remembered that he had planned to propose to Vanessa. And I got it. My heart sank a little. But he was here with me now, and that was what mattered. He helped me with my shoes because I sure as heck wasn’t putting on those gorgeous heels until I absolutely had to, then, donning jackets, Sinjin and I made our way downstairs to wait for the shuttle to take us to the ferry.
As Brandon and Len had gone over early to sort out where everybody would stand, along with the officiant, we waited for the rest of the wedding party.
“Hey, Geet,” a male voice called out to me. Although it was a familiar voice, I couldn’t place how I knew it until I turned my head to glance over my shoulder. Rob stood there wearing a tuxedo suit similar to Sinjin’s. Rob, as inRob. The jerkface who’d broken my sister’s heart. In Chile. Wearing a suit. Waiting to get on the ferry that would take us to the island and looking hot while doing it. To me, no man was as hot as Sinjin, but Rob had it going on with his Sicilian dark hair, dark eyes and olive skin combination. And I’d been privy to seeing that body currently hidden under his tux shirtless at the beach a time or two, when he and Lu dated. With the way the suit fit him, I knew some things hadn’t changed.
The nerve of him talking to me. “What in the heck are you doing here?” I asked.
Sinjin got a little protective, sliding in next to me, gliding his arm around my waist. “Who is this guy?” he asked. “Why do you look like someone just socked you in the gut?” He narrowed his eyes at the man.
“This isRob.” I made sure to speak his name disdainfully, the way one might say, “This isSatan.”
“Lu’s Rob,” Rob answered.
“Don’t let her hear you say that.” Then I turned to my man, smiling ruefully. “Rob here is the idiot who threw away the best thing to ever happen to him.”
“Ouch.” Sinjin winced.
“I deserved that,” Rob replied.
“You deserve more than that,” I said.
“Len’s one of my best friends. He got back in touch with Kami through my jump school,” Rob answered. “I didn’t know you were bringing anyone—was hoping Lu would’ve tagged along.” I didn’t know how to process this information so I went with the easiest to deal with now.
“I knew you had a jump school, but…” I closed my eyes and pressed a bent finger to my lips careful not to mess up my makeup. Then, after huffing out a breath, I was calm enough to look at him again. “I had no idea that Len instructed atyourschool. Does Lu know?”
“Naw, Len wasn’t around much when she and I were dating. They never met. Listen, I’ve been trying to get a hold of her. How’s Lu doing?” he asked.
“As if you care,” I answered dryly. “She’ll be surprised to learn you aren’t currently burning in hell. I guess the spells didn’t work.” Sinjin gave my waist a little squeeze, dipping his chin and twisting his neck to the side to keep me from seeing him chuckle. Glad I amused him.
Rob, unshaken by my malice-fueled comment, ignored it completely. “Clearly, I care, Brigeeta, or I wouldn’t be asking.”
“Okay then, how about this? My sister’s wellbeing is none of your business. You had your chance.”
“Look, we don’t have to be enemies. What happened, happened, but that doesn’t mean—”
“Listen,” Sinjin said, cutting in. “Geet is here to see her best friend get married. Let’s leave any talk that would hinder her from having a good time until we get back home, okay?”
“And who are you?” Rob asked.
“Sinjin Barrow, Geet’s man.”
Rob raised an eyebrow at me, but he didn’t comment anymore and secretly I was so glad to have Sinjin finish this conversation for me. Meredith, Dion, Henri, and Kami all joined us for the ferry over. We all stayed inside instead of on deck so as to not ruin our hair any sooner than it would actually get ruined once we were up on top of that stupid monument.
Everyone who showed for the event became part of the wedding party, even Sinjin, who not only got the onceover from an appreciative Kami on the ferry over, but a hug and cheek kiss, too, along with her, “Thank you for being here. It means the world to us.”
“Hey now,” I said. “Don’t you already have a hot guy?” Jokingly, I shot her the side-eye.
“I’m almost married, but I’m not dead, Geet. You show up with a juicy steak, I’m gonna check it out despite having one waiting on my plate for me.”
In fake affront, Sinjin placed his hand to his chest. “Ladies, please. I’m more than a piece of meat.”
As we all laughed, Kami elbowed me. “I like this guy. He’s a keeper.” Then to Sinjin, she said, “Treat my girl good, okay? She deserves some goodness in her life. I like you, so I don’t want to have to de-flesh you with the boning knife on the boat.”
