Page 6 of Devil's Due: Sarge

She continues to sleep for a couple of hours. And then I wish she hadn’t woken up.

“Who the hell are you?” she asks in a voice sounding still too weak to be talking. “And where’s Dr. Brennan-Ellis?”

“She had to leave and since you’re here in the hospital with all these other doctors, it didn’t bother her to get on with her day. I’m Sarge. I’m your bodyguard.”

“Sarge?” she asks. “Vlad and Nicola left me alone with the jolly white giant…Great. Real good of them.”

“I’m the VP of the club. Since he has to keep an eye on Nicola, nobody better to keep an eye on you.”

“Let me guess. Your dad lives in the dark forest outside of Hogwarts with the other giants?”

Even sick, she’s feisty. I love it. And for the first time in a long time, I throw my head back and laugh with reckless abandon.

“Unfortunately, no… It would be cool, however. Because then I’d come from magic blood and I’d use my powers to shut you up.”

She uses her scant energy to weekly raise her middle finger at me, on the hand with the IV attached. And all I can think is, that must be her dominant hand, therefore, she’s left-handed.

I grin at her. “Maybe once you’re feeling better, we can get you back home to the island of Lilliput.”

“A biker who knows the classics? From the looks of you, I’m surprised that you know how to read.”

“Audiobook,” I tease. She rolls her eyes at me, and reading the look on her face, it not only took a lot of effort, but it caused her some pain as well.

She closes her eyes to rest again, and I have to admit, I immediately miss the banter.

Whenever she wakes up, the first thing she says is, “You’re still here? Looks like I lost at life again.”

And I want to kick myself because I find I’m anxiously awaiting those moments. She’s been through too much in her life, especially considering she and Nicola had to flee a safehouse that was compromised. Women were killed or taken. I’m the last complication she needs right now, but while she’s been asleep, and even more so while she’s been awake giving me shtick, I figured a few things out. Mainly, she’s mine. That’s the feeling. That’s that thing gripping my chest. I think it will take time to get her to realize it, but that’s okay. With her recovering, slowly but surely, we’ve got the time.

Time.

The sun sets. The sun rises.

Nothing really changes. Not for a couple more days where I never leave her side other than for the few meetings that Vlad calls, and we meet in the floor’s waiting room because I’m not willing to leave Greer’s protection detail for very long. But we always have someone on her.

Vlad and Nic stay to hang out with us. It’s…fun.

Finally, her doctor comes into the room today and says he’s signing the order for her to be able to go home. Before the guy is even out of the room, Greer has her clothes in hand and is heading for the bathroom.

I know I shouldn’t be ogling a woman who spent three days in the hospital, but she comes out wearing these skin tight black jeans that hug her ass like they were painted on, and a white ribbed tank top with a logo for a bar that readsHalfwayon it.

She’d showered and washed her hair. The hospital provides blow dryers and clean, her hair looks even more like corn silk. I want to reach out and run my fingers through it – though I resist, not wanting to freak her out.

“Well, one good thing about getting out today,” Greer says as she pats my chest. “I no longer have to put up with you.”

“Shit was going down while you were unconscious, and it continued to get worse while you were in here. No, sweetheart. You’re stuck with me for the foreseeable future.”

She has the audacity to look aghast, which only serves to make me laugh. I’m going to have fun wearing this one down. “Why can’t Vlad do it?”

“Because Vlad’s on Nicola. I’m on you – in the morning, sweetheart, when you’re ready, I’ll beinyou.”

Her eyes go comically round, but as they settle back to normal, I notice the heat behind them. Oh yeah, she wants me. Our own version of foreplay. This should be fun. She’s not going to get me until she begs for it.

After a thorough sweep of the parking lot, we head for the truck that one of my brothers, Reaper, switched out for me in order to bring Greer home. He’s taking my bike back to the compound. I load Greer into the passenger seat and am jogging around to the driver’s side when I’m met with an order from Vlad. Greer’s to go to the clubhouse.

“The clubhouse, man? You think that’s a good idea?” I ask. “She needs to rest.”

“You’ve been here for days.Youneed to rest. That’s an order. As for Greer, she needs to meet the brothers. She needs to endear herself to the men. Sheneedsto make them want to protect her and Nic no matter what.”
