I jump out to make sure everyone is okay.
“The fuck you doin’?” Rex shouts at me.
“Sorry, man. Deer,” I answer, palms pressed to my forehead. I’m a jumble of nerves and this don’t help.
“Got that,” Rex snaps back. “Talkin’ bout goin’ fuckin’ speed racer. You could’ve killed us all.”
“Dammit, I know.” I drop my hands as I begin to pace. “Just worried about Jonesie.”
His face goes soft when I say her name. She needs to have a talk with him. She needs to let him know she’s with me now.
“You okay?” I ask Mad Man.
“I’m fine. Bike’s fine.”
“Then we need to move our asses,” Specter says. “Just don’t kill us, yeah?” he ends that on a question though he’s not really asking.
“Right.” I tip my chin up to each of the men then jump back behind the wheel of my truck. I wait, watching them mount their bikes before taking off again. I go fast but nowhere near the suicide speed of before.
Hang on, Jonesie. Please, god, hang on. I’m coming for you.
