Page 77 of Devil's Work: Dark

The kids go wild, cheering on their mom. I shout and whistle like a goddamn fool. Vlad, Nic and their two, Tripp and Titus. Sarge, Greer and their fucking brood. Reap, Dusty, and their twins, Raven and Riordan. Cut, Aja, and their little one, Lex. He’s the same age as Sonny. Rough, and his woman—he fucking married Vlad’s older sister. She had a kid when she was a teen. His name is Waite. He’s a prospect for the club. Waite’s good people despite his dipshit dad never being in the picture and Vlad having lost touch with his sister. Literally. When he got out of prison, he couldn’t find his sister. She and the kid had disappeared off the face of the Earth for all he knew. Then she shows up one day needing a place to stay and Rough liked what he saw. Things got tense between him and Vlad for a while. Not a fun time at the club. But it’s all worked itself out. She’s expecting their first kid together.

Green’s getting his act together. The first step happened when we finally caught that son of a bitch Bible Belt Killer. Though, Green almost hurt the case when we did. An angry and vindictive Green doesn’t think straight. Or he didn’t at that time. Once we got him off the booze, he spearheaded the hunt. Took it up several notches. And when Green caught up with that bastard, he carved the wordSinnerinto his forehead. Then, with him still breathing, still feeling, Green inflicted more pain on him carvingMurdererinto his chest before beating the shit out of him. We dropped him “anonymously” on the doorstep of the FBI.

The trial turned into a circus with the whole world’s eyes on us and journalists from everywhere descending on Kentucky, where the trial was being held. Rae, being his only victim to escape, had to testify in that trial, too.

That was the night we conceived Crimson. Fuck… that was a good night.

Still, even convicting the bastard didn’t totally bring Green back to us. That credit goes to Danni. She’s the daughter of one of The Bible Belt Killer’s victims.

And fuck, I don’t think any of us will ever get over who it was—No. Fuck that, Dark. Your woman’s graduating today. Get out of your goddamn head.

I look down at Sonny, then over to Mav, Lacy, and Ty. Then I look back up to the stage at their mom and smile. If anyone would’ve told me seven years ago that this is how my life would turn out, I’d have laughed in their fucking face, or punched them. It’s a toss-up.

Instead, I cup my hands around my mouth and yell, “That’s my fucking woman!” The kids stand, screaming and cheering like they’re at a fucking rock concert. Since I broke the seal, the rest of our group stand, making fools of themselves by following suit.

But we don’t embarrass Rae. Not my woman. She turns those twinkling eyes and bright smile on us, then throws her head back and laughs.

God, she’s so beautiful. I was supposed to set up an appointment to get snipped. I don’t know. She just might end this night getting knocked up one last time instead. I could think of worse ways to end the night. I could think of worse lives to live.

Reaper

My phone, set to vibrate, buzzes on the bar next to my glass of Hendrick’s on the rocks, causing little droplets of gin to fly out of the glass. Dammit. I press my hands to my eyes to break the mesmerization then realize I should probably pick up the damn phone.

You’d need a bread trail to lead you out of the mess my brain has become. Winky shot dead. He might’ve only been a prospect, but he was good people. And I couldn’t save him. Then there was the shit that Rae, Dark’s woman, and her sister Dela went through. All of this at the hands of The Bible Belt Killer. Thank fuck Rae made it out alive—but she’s suffering. Dela. Goddamn, what that man did to her. Carved her up like a Thanksgiving turkey.

It’s not a number I recognize but I answer it anyway. “What?” I bark into the line.

“You’re a hard motherfucker to get a hold of.” That’s a voice I haven’t heard in years. A voice I never expected to hear again, if I’m being honest. He was part of my old life, the life that hasn’t fit for the past—what? It has to be close to a decade now.

“Shady?”

“It ain’t safe to talk on the phone. I need a meet. Word on the street you’re looking for some bitches that got snatched from a safe house in Texas.”

He’s got my attention. “What do you know?”
