“I don’t get it. It wasn’t even like this with…” I can’t say her name. I feel like shit about it, too.

“Let me tell you something, and this is truth—there are women who get under your skin. You can’t shake ’em. The only thing you can do is ride that until the natural conclusion.”

“You saying that’s Danni?”

“Nope. Dela.”

“The fuck?”

“There are women who get under your skin, and there are women who get under your skin and worm their way into your heart without you ever seeing it coming. We’re men. We think with our dicks most of the time, so we mistake a woman getting under our skin for love until we find the real deal and then—well, you know the difference.”

“I need the brothers. She’s moving to Bentley.”

“Where are you?”

“Texas. She wanted me to meet her sister.”

“Her sister? And you went? You are so fucked, brother.”

“So you coming or what?”

“We’ll head out in the morning. Give us a couple of days.”

“Hang on,” I say, then pop the door to the room and yell, “Babe, need your address.”

Misty squeals as Danni rattles it off for me. Fucking cheerleaders. Damn. I rub my hand over my forehead and tell him where to meet us.

The whole while he’s laughing in my ear. “So fucking screwed,” he says before hanging up.

That’s it. Danni’s moving to Kentucky.

I walk back inside the room and the sisters are just where I left them, though Danni looks up at me smiling so damn big and beautiful that I want to pull her into the bathroom and fuck her right now. But I won’t.

“You staying the night?” I ask Misty. It’s a Tuesday but hopefully, her dad will let her pass on school for a day to visit with her sister.

“Am I allowed?”

“That’s between you and your dad. But we got two beds. So it’s cool either way with me.”

Misty pulls her phone out of the brown leather purse with the boho fringe hanging off the flap that she flung onto the bed when she entered the room, to call her dad. He asks to speak with Danni.

“I know, it was a surprise,” Danni says into the receiver. Then she pauses for Misty’s dad to speak. “You don’t know how much I appreciate this,” she says. I stay quiet in the background until she hangs up. Then I kick off my shoes and lie down on Danni’s and my bed to watch a little TV. I keep it low so they can talk.

Danni and I won’t be fucking tonight, but it’s worth it to see her this happy.

While Misty is in the bathroom getting ready for bed—I lent her one of my T-shirts because the thing will hang down to her knees—Danni climbs in bed next to me and I pull her into my arms. “Vlad says the brothers will be here in a couple of days to help get you moved. We need to contact your landlord to end the lease.”

“Okay. I can do that.”

“Still feeling good about this?” I ask.

“Are you second-guessing it?”

“Fuck no. I just mean being here with your sister and all…”

“Oh—no. I’ll miss my sister. But I miss her all the time. The change will do me good. I’ve been hellbent on catching the psycho who killed my mother and we’re after him. But what will I do when he’s caught? It won’t bring my mother back. And you know, I get you out of the deal, so I think it’s a win.”

“I’m taking care of you, Preppy. Promise.”
