Dark walks over to the sink with me. “Let me see,” he orders, grabbing my hand.
I pull it back. “I’m fine.” Things have been tense between us still since I brought Danni home to live with me. The man’s a goddamn hypocrite. He didn’t even like Dela, but now because I’ve found some happiness with Danni, he acts like they were best friends and I’m betraying her. What? He doesn’t think I went through all those arguments with myself before I gave in with Danni? And if Rae has a problem, she’s a fucking hypocrite too. She was pregnant with Lacy when her husband died and she hooked up with Dark before the baby was even two years old. She okay with betraying her first man?
“Let me look,” he orders. “I think that might need a few stitches. Someone can take you to the ExpressMed place.”
“Yeah, fine.” I wrap a clean garage towel around the wound.
As I start to walk away, heading for the office, he shouts, “Danni still not answering your call?”
That just incenses me. “The fuck you care?”
“We don’t have to be enemies.”
“Bullshit.Youmade us enemies. You and Rae think you’re so much better than me and Danni?”
“Don’t bring my wife into this.”
“She’s in it. I was with Del. I’d have done anything to save her, but that’s not how shit worked out. I’m no more betraying Dela than Rae did fucking you after her first man died.”
“It’s not—”
“It’s not the same? It’s exactly the same. Only difference is Dela had a connection to Rae and your bitch doesn’t like that I’m trying to fix my life. But whether you accept Danni in my life or not, she’s there. I can’t force myself to become a damn monk for the rest of my life. Bet you had a similar talk with Rae, so why’s it different for me?”
“Let’s get that hand taken care of.” He leaves the garage, expecting me to follow him, and since I’m bleeding all over the place, it’s probably a good idea I do. We pop into the office to let Vlad know we’re heading out for a bit.
Dark drives me in one of the company trucks over to the ExpressMed. And because I’m bleeding, they see me right away. It takes three stitches to close the damn thing because that bolt dug deep. And I have to get a fucking tetanus shot.
“You can’t work with your hand bandaged like that,” he says on the way back to the garage.
“I got a car to finish.”
“We’ll get it done. You should call Danni, let her know I’m taking you home.”
Thisnot being allowed to drivething is getting really fucking old. I pull my phone out to call her and I see a text from her that had to have come in while I was getting my hand looked at.
“At least she texted back.” I press the notification to read what she wrote and my heart stops. Not again. This can’t be fucking happening again.
“What?” Dark asks. “You’re as white as a ghost.” He pulls over to the side of the road, swiping my phone from me to read the text that sure as hell didn’t come from Danni.
Danni’s phone:She pretends to be a good girl, but she’s really a whore. Whores need to pay for their sins.
“Goddammit,” Dark shouts, throwing my phone back onto my lap. Then he pulls his phone from his front pocket, bringing it up to his mouth as he heads for the compound instead of the garage. “Siri, call Vlad.”
After a couple of seconds, the phone rings, and our president answers. “Get to the compound,” Dark barks at Vlad.
“What happened? Nic, Rae?”
“He’s got Danni.”
“Fuck!” Vlad shouts. “Meeting you there.” He hangs up and I swear if I open my mouth, I’m puking all over the inside of this truck.
As Dark races up to the Horde property, I feel myself go numb. If he takes Danni from me, I’ve got nothing left to live for. I’ll burn the fucking world down. My one chance at love, at redemption, and I let him get to her.
She wanted to go after him. I held us back.
“Why would he call Danni a whore?” Dark asks. “She’s a damn cheerleader.”
Hell if I know.
