Page 53 of Devil Inside: Green

I pick up my phone, texting Danni’s number back.

Me:Who is this? You got the wrong woman. She’s no whore. She’s a good woman.

Danni’s phone:Good woman? Do good women call your friends behind your back?

What?

Me:What the fuck are you talking about?

Danni’s phone:Let her tell you.

The phone rings with Danni’s number. I answer it right away. “Preppy?”

Rather than answer, she screams in pain into the line.

“Tell him,” a distorted voice says in the background.

“I got Carter’s number from Jack,” she cries. “I wanted to find out if he had any more information for us.”

“Don’t lie,” the distorted voice says. “Tell him—tell him the truth.”

She screams again. “I told Jack I didn’t want you to know. I thought… I thought you’d try to stop me. Darry—I wasn’t messing around on you.”

“Lies,” the distorted voice shouts and the worst scream yet rips through the phone.

“Danni, babe. Hold on. Fuck. I love you.Don’t—please, God, don’t let him win.” My voice turns thick. “Listen here, motherfucker. You’re dead. You’re so dead.”

“Green,” Danni shrieks one last time before the call drops.

Dark has his phone to his ear. “Carter, man. Just got a call from Danni’s phone. Do your fucking magic. Where’d that call ping from?”

“Green,” Carter’s voice comes through on speaker. “We’ll get her. History’s not fucking repeating itself. You hear me? It’s not—” He hangs up. I know he feels this deep. This is Danni. Her mom was already taken and we couldn’t stop any of the others from dying.

Waite opens the gate for us. It’s a good thing he recognizes the logo on the truck because Dark doesn’t slow down until he skids the tires to stop over the loose gravel right next to the clubhouse. He doesn’t have the truck off before I’m out, running inside the common room to get to the war room. He’s right on my heels.

I notice one of the pussies with Tasha and Ace, which means Sarge has to be in the war room already. We round the bar. Sarge and Rough are there.

“Vlad should be here—”

“Right here,” Vlad says from behind us. “Reap and Cut are on their way. Had to make sure the women had security.”

“What the fuck happened?” Rough asks.

“Danni wasn’t returning any of my calls. It’s unusual, but—fuck—I didn’t act when my gut told me something was wrong. Then I sliced my goddamn hand and noticed after I got out of ExpressMed that she’d texted back.”

“It wasn’t Danni who texted back,” Dark says and I hand Vlad the phone with the text pulled up. He reads it then passes it around to the other brothers. “We got Carter on it right now. This maniac called us. Those calls had to ping off cell towers.”

“He’s torturing her,” I say. “She screamed so loud, it shook the whole truck.”

“This whole fucking time we thought we were hunting him,” Sarge says, running a hand over his face. “He was watching us.”

“Eyes and ears,” I reply. “He somehow heard Danni get Carter’s number from Jack. She didn’t want me to know about it because she thought I’d stop her from going after the killer again. He took that as Danni cheating on me. Danni wouldn’t cheat. If she didn’t want us, she’d let me go first.”

“For what it’s worth, Carter’s too upstanding a guy to go after a woman already in a relationship,” Sarge says. “He’s a flirt, but when it comes down to it, he’d never go behind a man’s back to fuck his woman.”

“Anyone call Jack?” Dark asks. “He’s been helping us hunt. We need to know if he’s got anything useful.”

Sarge picks up his phone from the table in front of him, pressing a contact. “Jack—he got one of our own again. Putting you on speaker.”
