“They used screws?”
He nods. “That trap messed your ankle up pretty bad. You spent an hour in recovery. They said you woke up once in there.”
“I don’t remember.”
“Hopefully, we get to spring you from this joint real soon.”
“Fingers crossed. I miss our bed.”
And damn if the face he gives me doesn’t melt my heart. “I miss our bed, too,” he says, all low and rumbly. Whoa—I need to fan myself. “Listen, we gotta talk.”
The seriousness of his demeanor makes me think of one word: Jack.
“I felt your body react when Jack walked in the room,” he says, picking up my hand, he links our fingers together before bringing our joined hands up to his lips to press a kiss to mine.
“You know, don’t you?” I ask.
“Did you see his face?”
I subtly shake my head. “No. He wore a mask. I heard his voice.”
“That’s what I figured. He’d have tried harder to get in here if he thought you’d seen his face. I think his showing up was a way to gauge if you could implicate him in any way. You played it good, baby, but we need to keep a guard on you for the time being.”
“You’re working with the FBI, aren’t you? Gathering evidence?”
“My woman is a goddamn genius,” he says. “Yeah, they’ve asked us to play it cool until they’re ready to make the arrest. They’re afraid of him taking off. It’s been hard for the men, especially Dark, to have to drink with the man like he’s a friend, and Sarge is wrecked.”
“This whole situation sucks,” I reply. “The sooner we can get him into custody, the better we’ll all feel.”
“When you get out of here, we’re leaving for—”
“I’m not leaving, Darry.”
He narrows his angry eyes at me. “Yes, we are.”
“Jack Dunham is not running me from my home. Besides the fact that it would look highly suspicious, Bentley is my home now. We have a life here together that he doesn’t get to ruin.”
“It’s a life we won’t have if he gets his hands on you again. I won’t take the chance.”
“Then do what you have to do to keep me safe. I won’t fuss about that. But we do it here, sleeping in our own bed. Please. It’s time to stand our ground, babe. It’s time.”
Green runs his hand through his hair. “I can’t… I can’t lose you, Danni. You are my everything. Don’t you get that?”
“Of course, I get that. This is exactly why we need to stay and protect what we’re building together. If Jack discovers we’ve left, do you really think he’s going to stay in town? You and I would be on the run in unfamiliar locations and there’d be no one to take our backs. Here, we have a whole club of men willing to do that the same as you’ve been willing to do for them.”
“I fucking hate when you make sense, you know that, right?”
I smile, feeling the tension ease out of the room for the time being. “Then living with me will be fun.”
He leans way into my body space and uses that sexy low grumble of his to say, “Can’t wait to fuck that smart from your mouth, Preppy. You’re gonna feel me in places you never knew you had.”
Oh, my…I feel my blood begin to heat with my eyes going momentarily unfocused as I contemplate the visual he’s just implanted in my mind. “Darry.” is the only word I can manage before swallowing hard.
He snickers. “Living with you will beveryfun.”
Great, now all I want to do is climb him like a stripper pole but I’m hooked up to this damn IV and we’re in a hospital and there is that whole injured by a serial killer thing. But anyone who has taken the dick from Green knows any pain or embarrassment in the aftermath would be worth it if that means getting railed by the man in the here and now.
Alas, he drops back down into his seat and picks up the television remote, flipping through each channel until he stops on SYFY. They’re playing The Mummy. The one with Brendan Fraser. I’d rather have sex with my man, but spending a couple of hours watching the swashbuckling Rick O’Connell save his Evie could hardly be considered a bad time.
