Well, if that wasn’t a shocker. A good one, but still.

“Danny will be on assignment for several days, so I’d like you to get Logan up to speed with cases and introduce him around.” Sam took a sip of water. “I’ve already given Logan a tour of the facility, and Marcia has set him up with a cubicle.”

“Be happy to.”

“Okay, then.” Sam stood and walked over to Logan. “If you have questions that Hank can’t answer, I’m around.” She put out her hand. “Welcome aboard. I know you’ll enjoy working here.”

“Thanks.”

“If we’re done here, I’ll show Logan around,” said Hank.

They left Sam’s office. Hank wanted to ask Logan a hundred questions, but now wasn’t the time. First, he’d get Logan settled and then see if he wanted to go to lunch. His curiosity was growing.

An hour later,Hank and Logan sat at a coffee shop close to KnightGuard Security.

The Roasted Bean had the best coffee in the area and offered a variety of interesting sandwiches. The lightly caramelized smell of coffee tantalized Hank’s nose, and he ordered a cup.

Hank sat back in his chair and observed Logan. The years appeared to be good to him. However, there was a furrow on his brow that hadn’t been there before, and his blue eyes looked tired, but other than that, he looked healthy and fit. Sure, Logan was older, but they all were.

“I’ve gotta tell you, I was stunned to see you in Sam’s office today.”

“About that … I meant to call when I arrived, but things happened too fast.”

“So why are you here?”

The waiter interrupted their conversation as he placed their food on the table and asked if they needed anything else. Logan took a big bite of his roasted turkey and pesto sandwich. When he swallowed, he put the sandwich down.

“I needed a change of scenery. I enjoyed working out west, but the company was going in a different direction, seeking big clients with big payouts. I wanted to work someplace smaller at a place that gave back to the community.”

“So how did you find KnightGuard Security?”

“Humph. If you answered your emails, you’d know. Danny gave me the information.”

Danny? Email? Hank rummaged through his memory for an email from Logan. Maybe it was in his spam folder. Whatever. Although perhaps he missed other emails from friends. Tonight he’d check.

“So tell me what you’ve been up to. Found a woman yet?” asked Logan.

“That’s the first thing you want to know after several years?”

“You were pretty broken up over Heather. Having a loved one take off and leaving you holding the bag is not something you get over easily.”

Hank debated telling him about Laura. Their relationship was still new, so shit could still happen.

“Naw. I’m fine.” Hank finished his sandwich and took a gulp of water. “You know me. I’m the love ’em and leave ’em kind.”

Logan shook his head. “You, my man, will fall hard when it happens.”

Hank wondered if that would be true. He enjoyed being with Laura. Their lovemaking was fantastic, and he was ready to go again.

But Hank wondered if Laura felt the same way about him. It would suck if he gave his heart to another woman, only to have it trampled again.

Hank was definitely goingto fall head over heels for some woman. She would have to be really special, but Logan knew that down deep, Hank was ready to settle down no matter how many times he protested.

Working with Danny and Hank again was going to be a positive change from the constant battle at his last company.
