The owner had been taking on more dangerous jobs and not assigning enough men to protect the client. Logan also suspected he was charging way too much for their services. Since the employees were given bonuses besides their salaries, Logan also suspected that a percentage was taken out and the owner kept it. It was a cutthroat operation, and Logan was glad to be out.

When Danny Knight called and told him about KnightGuard Security and their mission, Logan was ready to jump on the first plane and fly to Black Pointe, Florida. Although he was never crazy for heat and humidity, he liked that KnightGuard’s mission was to give back to the community. He liked that Sam Knight provided free self-defense lessons to women and children at the shelter, and he especially liked that the company gave seed money to women starting over.

He wished his mother had that support. The best thing that she’d ever did was let him live with his mother’s aunt when he was ten. Mom went into hiding. She never told his abusive father where she went or where Logan was living. But the screams, bruises, and broken bones she endured were something he’d never forget. His father died not long after Logan’s fifteenth birthday. He discovered a few years ago that his mother died shortly after. Logan never went to his father’s funeral and never looked back. Men or women who abused another person were the lowest forms of scum.

Sam Knight was unlike anyone who ran a security company that he could imagine. He didn’t expect to see a pretty, petite woman behind the desk. But he’d heard rumors that she was a force to be reckoned with. After speaking with her, Logan was convinced that not only could she take care of herself, but she’d have his back.

Several people he’d talked to suggested that Logan connect with Joe Harkin. He had met with the ex-SEAL the other day to discuss the job possibility.

Joe told him that the employees respected and liked Sam. She ran a tight ship. The employees were all well-paid and volunteered for free at the shelter as a sign of respect, although Sam gave them generous bonuses at the end of the year, which were appreciated.

After meeting Joe, Logan called up the other security company in Georgia he was to interview with and canceled. He wanted a company consistent with his values, and Logan felt he scored working for KnightGuard Security.

“Sure surprised to see you today.”

“Uh?” Hank was talking to him. Here he was, letting his guard down and not paying attention. Remembering the past did that to a person.

“I think you’ll enjoy working for Sam and the company. Great people to work with.”

“I’m sure. It beats the hell out of the company I just left.” Logan told Hank what had been going on.

“Don’t blame you for leaving. Have you thought about where you’re going to live?”

Where indeed? Logan hadn’t thought that far ahead since he had the two interviews set up. “I guess I better look for a place.”

“There’s an empty apartment in my building you can use.”

“Hmmm. Is it in the building you own?” Logan remembered Hank had told him and Danny years ago about the trusts his parents had set up for him. Hank was extremely wealthy but never talked about money.

“Yes.”

Logan finished his sandwich and pushed the plate away. “Still keeping your net worth close to the vest?”

“Not that it’s anyone’s business, but I don’t talk about money.” Hank’s brow furrowed. “You and Danny are the only two who know, and I want to keep it that way.”

Logan put his hands up. “No problem, dude. Just asking.”

Hank shrugged. “I know it’s silly, but I hate having people know that I have money and then ask me to donate to something I don’t believe in. I prefer to give my own way.”

“I hear you.” Logan tapped on the table. “So when can I move in, and how much is the rent?”

“You can move in any time.” Hank told him about the rent, which Logan thought was very reasonable. He had little to move, just his clothes and personal items, so having a furnished apartment worked for him.

Logan hoped the new job would work out the way he expected. It would be nice to develop roots in a community, make friends, and perhaps find a woman to love. Was that too much to ask?

CHAPTERTWENTY-EIGHT

Ryan had been at the bistro several times and engaged in conversations with a couple of servers.

However, his goal of getting into the bistro to find the secret room was taking longer than he had hoped.

He had another date tonight with Jaimie Walton. She reminded him of someone, but nothing was coming up in his memory. They hit it off the first time he’d been in Salt & Sea for lunch. She was new in town, just like him. Jaimie was smart, funny, and pretty. That didn’t matter. A woman didn’t figure in his grand plan. At least not for now.

Ms. Daisy Winters was taking care of his sexual needs for the present. He sure had called it when he first met Daisy. She was fun and really good at sucking cock.

Ryan shook his head. Enough of thinking about his cock. He needed to focus on finding the secret room and staying alive.

He looked at his watch. Damn. Jaimie was waiting for him. He promised to pick her up at six, and it was now 5:45 p.m. She lived outside of town in a less expensive area. It would take about twenty minutes to get there.
