“To the Great Hall.” Nela said as she held the main door open. “The Magi are gathering everyone there. It’s the safest place.”

“Shouldn’t we be fighting?” I said.

“No.” Nela and Indi said together.

“But…” I began but they pulled me along, down the corridors, and I had to run just to stop myself from falling.

More screams echoed around us. The sounds of something heavy crashed so close it felt like the earth was shaking. I could taste it, the magic in the air.

My own magic responded to it, as if my very core was urging me to fight.

“Wait.” I gasped.

“What is it?” Indi said.

“We can help. I can help.” I stated.

“No you can’t.” Nela said. “Jelric is sorting it. We have strict orders to get to the Great Hall.”

“From who?” I asked.

“From me.” Fain said.

I half glared up at him as he stepped out of the shadows.

“I can help.” I said.

“No.” He replied shaking his head.

“Please let me help. You know I can.”

“I said no.” He snapped.

I narrowed my eyes. “What’s the point in training me then? What’s the point in me being here?”

Before he could answer something smashed through the wall. It felt like an explosion went off. Blocks of stone went flying. Crashing into the walls around us. Crashing into us too.

I screamed as Fain wrapped his body around mine, as he pulled me away from the epicentre and we fell under a mass of debris.

For a moment everything went blank.

An awful deafening silence filled the air.

I lay still, half wondering if I was dead, but the ringing in my ears told me otherwise. As did the pain in my head.

My entire body felt numb. Like something was crushing it. I tried to move my legs but they didn’t respond, no doubt because the stone around us prevented it.

“Fain.” I whispered.

“I’m here.” He said back.

I blinked opening my eyes but everything was dark. I could only just make out his eyes, his jaw, how close his face was to mine. And the fact that his arms were still cradling me.

“Are you hurt?” He asked.

“Only my head I think. Are you?”

“A few bruises, that’s all.” He replied.
