“But I’m Fae.” I said. “That’s exactly what I’m meant to do.”

I felt his head shake. Felt his hand move to touch my cheek. To stroke it. “I don’t want you in danger.” He murmured.

“You hate me.” I stated.

“No.”

“You hate what I am.”

He let out a low breath. “Maybe once.”

I looked up trying to see his face but it was too dark.

I could feel his hand still on me, his body pressed against me. Something inside, something unfathomable stirred.

And then his lips crashed into mine. I gasped half in shock, half in something else. His tongue invaded my mouth, wrapped around mine.

It felt like something inside me ignited, some raging inferno that would never burn out. I kissed him back. I pulled at his shirt, as he half devoured my mouth.

As the sound of movement above us registered, we broke apart. I stared at him. Not daring to speak. Not knowing what to say.

Voices called out.

Fain replied back that we were here.

And all the while he held my gaze.

As the debris was removed I felt the numbness in my legs giving way to pain. Real, excruciating pain. I winced, screwing my face up as I registered it.

“She’s injured.” Fain yelled.

“So are you.” I murmured looking at the angle of how his left shoulder was hanging. It wasn’t normal.

He gave me a look that told me he already knew.

“You said just bruises.” I muttered.

“I lied.” He said back.

“Anything else you lied about?” I asked.

He opened his mouth to reply but someone was there, easing him off, leaving my crushed body where it was.

The healer fussed around me. My shoulder was dislocated. My arm had a fracture. Both injuries I was aware of.

Both of them of no real consequence.

Because she was still lying there. In that hole.

I could hear them muttering. Could hear the debate about how best to get her out. Whether to heal some of her injuries first and ease her pain or to leave her suffering whilst the great boulders crushing her legs were removed.

She barely made a sound. Only the occasional whimper and she looked ashamed at herself every time it did. As if she was forcing herself to bear this all in silence.

Indi and Nela were stood at the perimeter. Nela had been hit by a block but a healer had sorted her long before they realised where we were. Indi had gotten away unscathed.

Somehow Alice had taken the worst of it. Despite my best attempts to protect her.

I’d kissed her.Gods what was I thinking?
