I’d felt her panic, could feel her tears too, as they’d soaked through my shirt. I shouldn’t have done it. I shouldn’t have crossed that line.
And yet she’d kissed me back.
It kept replaying in my head. How her lips felt, how she tasted. The way she’d clung to me and that moan she’d made. Gods that moan.
I looked back at the hole. At where she was still stuck. All my instincts told me to push the healer off, to push them all away, to clamber back in and hold her, comfort her, until she was free.
But I couldn’t do that.
I didn’t know if she even wanted that.
Maybe she’d only returned the kiss because of the situation we’d been in. Maybe it was simply the adrenaline reacting. I screwed my face up hating the thought.
“Are you in pain Prince Fain?” The healer asked.
I guess I was. Just not the sort of pain you could articulate. Certainly not the sort of pain you could heal.
A cry echoed off the walls.
I sprung to my feet, ignoring the throbbing from my half healed shoulder and the protests of the poor man trying to fix me.
The boulders were off. The Magi had twisted their magic, making them float right out the window and down into the moat below.
Someone clambered in, scooping her up and as I stared on, they carried her out. Her left leg was the worse. Clearly it’d taken the brunt of the force. Her right leg was bent at an angle that told us all it was broken too.
I scanned her face. She was pale. Too pale. Her eyes were shut but I could tell she wasn’t unconscious.
“She needs something for the pain.” I growled.
“They’re healing her in her rooms.” Someone said.
I shook my head. That wasn’t good enough. She was in pain now. How could they not see? How could they not just treat her here?
“Fain.”
I turned as my anger flared.
Uther stood surveying the damage. “Are you hurt?” He asked.
I shrugged, hissing as my shoulder protested painfully.
“And the girl?” He asked.
“Worse. Much worse.” I replied.
“Jelric.” Uther called. “Go to her rooms. I want to know as soon as she’s healed.”
“Yes your Highness.”
“I’m coming too.” I said.
“I need to finish healing you Prince Fain.” The healer said.
I scowled. Like I gave a shit how injured I was right now.
Jelric frowned at me for a moment before walking away. And Uther put his hand on my good shoulder, preventing me from leaving.
Preventing me from going to her.
