It was Fain.

And he was once again pulling a face.

“Oh shit.” I muttered.

“You shouldn’t be here.” He said.

“I just came for a drink.” I replied. “Indi and Nela are both here. I’m following your rules.”

“It’s not safe.” He said.

“Do you want me to go then?” I asked.

He let out a low breath running his eyes over me in a way that made my blood heat. “Sit with me.”

I thought about saying no. I thought about telling him where to shove it but perhaps I might get some answers if I did. “Are you going to keep me safe Prince Fain?” I teased as I followed him.

He let out a low laugh. “How much have you drunk?”

I showed him my glass. I’d only had a few mouthfuls. Enough to take the edge off but nowhere near enough to make me stupid.

“Mermaids? You drink Mermaids?” He said.

I shrugged. “They’re too sweet really but it was Indi’s suggestion.” I reached for his glass. “What are you drinking?”

“You won’t like it.” He said with wry smile.

“Always so confident.” I replied before taking a sip of the dark whiskey looking drink.

It was bitter, bitter and sharp, and it caught in the back of my throat. I tried to supress the cough but failed.

Fain laughed. “Told you.”

I handed the glass back to him. “Here you can keep this.”

He smirked taking a sip, clearly savouring the taste more than I had.

We were sat off in an alcove. One of the last to have any seating. As I glanced around I saw Nela stood with a clear enough view of me.

Damn she needed a night off too. A real night off.Maybe if I agreed to stay in my room she could have one.

“What are you thinking?” Fain asked.

I looked at him. “You never came to see me.” I said.

He face softened just a little. “I didn’t know if you wanted me to.”

I looked down, stared at my boots. “They told me you were healed.” I murmured.

“I didn’t know you were that injured. I would have…”

“What?” I asked. “What would you have done?”

He shut his eyes, shook his head before looking around us. Surveying all the people that seemed to be partying. “Did you know you could do that, that you could destroy the spectral?”

I winced. “Not exactly.”

“I see.”
