“I know what you’re going to say.” I began.
“Do you?” He half-snapped. “I told you before. I keep telling you and you don’t listen.”
“What do you want Fain? What is it huh?”
He shook his head. “I don’t want you in danger.”
“You said that before.” I stated. “And it was bullshit the last time.”
“How is it bullshit?”
“Because I’m Fae.” I cried. “That’s exactly where I’m meant to be. Where your brother wants me.”
“I don’t care what my brother wants. I don’t want you hurt, I don’t want you risking your life…”
“Why?”
“Why do you think?” He said. “Because I care about you. Because I can’t stand to see...” He stopped mid-sentence as if he’d spoken too much.
“What did you just say?” I said quietly.
“It doesn’t matter.” He said getting to his feet.
“Fain.”
He didn’t turn back. He didn’t stop. He just walked away.
Leaving me sat there, leaving me reeling from his revelation.
He cared about me? He actually cared about me?
I sat unmoving, staring at the ground as I tried to process it. Around me the Courtyard partied. The Courtyard celebrated.
But I didn’t know what to feel.
How was that possible? He hated me. He’d said as much. But he was the one who’d kissed me. He was the one who’d initiated it.
I could feel it again. That kiss.
But it wasn’t just the physical aspect. It wasn’t just how it had felt to have his lips against mine. It was more than that, it was how I’d responded. How my body had.
Was I mad to think there was something more, something deeper, like some sort of bond between us? Was that even possible?
“Alice?”
I heard Nela’s voice. Knew she was there, talking to me but I didn’t react.
I needed a moment to think. A moment to realise whatIfelt about all this.
And when I looked up, I knew.
“Do you know where the Prince’s room is?” I asked.
She blinked. Nodding slowly.
“Can you take me there?”
“Alice.”
