“Of course he is.” I replied leading him through the castle. “And he’s anxious to see you.”
Hal let out a low breath. “Don’t tell him I was scared.”
I paused looking down at him.
“Please uncle. I don’t want him to think I’m a baby.”
“You’re not a baby.” I replied.
“I was.” He hung his head staring at his boots that were caked in dirt from the ride.
I knelt down lifting his chin to make him look at me. “Want to know a secret Hal?”
He nodded.
“I was scared too.”
“No you weren’t. You don’t get scared.”
“Yes I do.” I replied. “I get scared all the time. Back at Heatherly I was scared you were harmed. I was scared I was too late.”
“You didn’t look scared.” He stated.
I ruffled his hair. “Neither did you.”
“That’s not true.” He pouted.
“The real secret Hal, is learning to master your fear. Learning when it can help you and when it will hinder.”
“How do I do that?”
“With practice.” I replied. “But you shouldn’t be ashamed about it. It’s a normal reaction.”
He looked away, bristling the way Uther did when he was done with a conversation.
“Come on then. Your father might lock me in dungeons if I take any longer.”
He laughed before setting off at a run. “Race you to him.” He shouted.
I grinned as I watched him for a moment. Despite the drama there seemed to be no permanent harm done.
* * *
He crashedinto the room before the guards could even announce him. The great golden doors slammed against their hinges.
“Beat you.” He yelled.
I smirked coming to a stop. I didn’t like to let him win. Didn’t like to spoil him but this time it had felt necessary.
Uther got to his feet as Cait rushed forward, falling on her knees to scan Hal’s face.
“I was so worried.” She said.
“I was fine.” Hal replied. “Uncle Fain was there.”
She looked at me and let out a chuckle at the tone.
“Come here Hal.” Uther said.
