“Tell me what?”

“That I don’t have any family.” I said forcing myself to look up. It wasn’t that big a deal. I’d done fine without them.

“He knew?”

I nodded. I guess they didn’t share everything then.

“What happened to them?” He asked.

“They died when I was young. I didn’t really have any friends either.”

“Why did you never say anything?”

I bristled, going into defensive mode. “You never asked.”

“Maybe I should have. Maybe I should have stopped to consider it.” He muttered. “You had a life you left behind in your world.”

“It doesn’t matter.” I said leaning back in my chair. “It’s better this way. There’s no one to miss, no one to miss me, now that I’m stuck here.”

“Do you really feel like that? That you’re stuck here?”

“Sometimes.” I admitted.

“I haven’t helped have I?” He said. “I wasn’t exactly kind to you. Not at the beginning.”

I curled my lips. “Is that an apology? From the Prince himself?”

He laughed before his face went serious. “I am sorry.” He said. “You deserved better and I should have seen it.”

“Why did you hate me so much?”

He frowned. “Seeing as you’re making confessions then I guess I will.” He replied. “You’re not the first Fae we’ve had here.”

“I know. Jelric told me.”

“Well he shouldn’t have.” He said. “Not all of them were like you. Not all of them had only just crossed over. And some were less than receptive to being held here.”

“I can’t blame them.” I muttered.

“It’s not something I’m proud of but we hid them. Kept them locked up. we needed time to change their minds.”

I frowned looking away. Feeling my stomach react.

“We didn’t realise it then but one Fae went mad and he betrayed us. He teamed up with the Magars. By the time we did realise a lot of people were dead.”

“How did he go mad?” I asked.

“Jelric said it was his magic.” Fain replied. “That it was too great and he couldn’t control it. The Magars must have got in his head, persuaded him they could save him.”

“So he betrayed you?”

“Yes. And he killed someone very important to me.” Fain stated.

“Who?”

“Her name was Elynn.”

I could tell from the way he said it, that he had loved her. Like I could feel his pain in that moment. “I’m sorry.” I said.
