He sighed, getting to his feet. “I would never have done that. I would never have tricked you.”

I shut my eyes, folding my arms, frowning as I saw my skin so perfectly healed. There wasn’t a mark on me. How was that even possible when the flames had all but covered me?

“Your magic healed you.” Fain said softly.

“Get out of my head.” I snarled.

“Alice please.”

I turned my face refusing to look at him.

He knelt down, grabbing my shoulders. “I didn’t do it. He ordered me to and I refused.”

I let out a bitter laugh. Did he think I was that stupid? That I’d fall for it all over again. “If that was the case why did you not tell me? Why did you hide it from me?”

He sighed. “I couldn’t. I knew what you’d think. How you’d react. I wanted you to trust me, to trust us, and how could you do that when my brother was demanding...” He trailed off.

I scowled at him. “I am not a thing to be used.”

“No.” He said.

“I am not a thing that he gets to control.”

“I know.” He said. “He should never have asked that. Should never have even thought about it.”

I shut my eyes. My anger was right there beneath the surface and yet I felt nothing. Not even the tiniest bit of magic. Clearly it was still gone.

“It will return.” He murmured.

I looked up and glared at him.

“They bound your magic with iron. Combined with the fire it might take a while.”

“Did Jelric tell you that?” I snapped.

“He was here. He’s been checking on you every day.”

“What do you mean? How long have I been asleep?” I asked.

“Three days.”

I gulped. No wonder I felt so hungry.

“I can get some food brought up.” He said. “Whatever you want.”

“Get out of my head.” I snarled.

His shoulders slumped. In truth I don’t think I’d ever seen him so defeated.

“I never meant to hurt you.” He said. “I never meant for this to happen. For any of this. I meant what I’d said when I said you’d captivated me. I wanted you because I saw you, as a person, not as anything else. Not for anything else.”

“And yet you lied.”

He shook his head slightly. “I’ll give you some space.” He murmured before leaving.

Only the silence he left behind was worse.

So much worse.
