I looked at Mira and swallowed down my pride. Or at least what little seemed to be left of it. “Can you get me tampons?” I asked.
Mira looked at me like I’d just broken out into another language. “What are they?” She asked.
“Things for, you know, the time of the month.” I replied.
“Oh. Are you bleeding now?” She asked.
Ignoring the flash of embarrassment despite the fact I technically had no reason to feel it, I cleared my throat. “No, but in a few days.”
“I can get you tea. If you drink it every day it’ll stop them coming and it’ll mean you won’t get pregnant if you, you know.” Mira said.
“Right.” That really wasn’t going to be an issue. “Why did you ask if I was bleeding then?”
“You can’t start it when you’re on. You have to wait.” Mira said.
“Oh.” I muttered.
“Want me to get it now?” Mira asked.
I nodded. Having a period would almost certainly make this entire situation even worse.
But when Mira disappeared a different thought came to my head. No one was guarding me, watching me.
I paced the room, wondering if I was being mad, reckless even? But surely this was my chance? If I could get away, if I could escape then maybe I could make it back.
I could still feel the pull, the feeling of magic inside me, surely I could use that to escape? I walked to the window looking out, it was a hell of a long way down. A hell of a long way to fall too.
“What are you looking at?” Mira asked.
I turned realising the moment had passed.
My chance. My escape. It was gone.
At least this time.
“Nothing. Just looking.” I said smiling and hoping I didn’t look as suspect as I felt.
Mira frowned as if she didn’t quite believe me and put what looked like a cup filled with herbs and flowers on the side.
“It tastes rank but if you down it quickly it does the job.” She said.
“Thanks.” I replied before downing the cup like it was a shot. The urge to gag, to throw it back up was almost overwhelming. It tasted like stewed dandelions mixed with gone off potatoes.
“You’re welcome.” Mira said beaming.
“You’re sure it works?” I checked. Maybe I was imagining it, but the cramping felt like it was already easing.
“Positive.” Mira replied before a knock at the door made us both turn.
Two soldiers walked in, shutting the door behind them. Two female soldiers by the looks of them.
Neither were wearing helmets. The taller had dark hair, shaved on one side, with the rest braided and the other had a silk wrap around concealing all of hers.
“I’m Nela and this is Indi.” The taller said while pointing to the other. “Prince Fain sent us to keep you safe.”
“Watch me more like.” I replied quickly.
“No honestly, we’re only here to keep you safe.” Indi said. “We’re from his personal protection guard.”
