I nodded picking them both up.

“Close your eyes. Try to stay as still as possible.” He said as I shut them. “And now take a deep breath and hold it in.”

I breathed in as deep as I could.

“Now hold it.” Jelric muttered.

It was subtle but it was there. The pull of magic, the tingling, only I knew it wasn’t my magic, it was Jelric’s. And then my whole body flashed with it, as if every cell, every tiny part of me suddenly woke up.

I opened my eyes and gasped, letting the air inside me out. The stick in my right hand was aflame. Bright red fire was flickering away and though I could feel the heat of it, it wasn’t burning me.

“How…?” I asked.

“Your body is made of water, you took in air, one stick represented our earth and the final one held fire. We used the elements and the magic inside them, to awaken your magic, to open the box.”

“So I can do magic now?”

He smirked. “Not exactly. You’ll need to learn how to pull it, how to create the right patterns, how to channel it and control it.”

My shoulders slumped. “Urgh.”

“Magic is a complex thing. It will take time.” Jelric stated.

I raised an eyebrow at him. “It doesn’t sound like the High King has much patience.”

“No he doesn’t. I want you to spend every morning with me. We’re going to start by teaching you the basics, and we’ll go from there.”

“Okay.” I said. Like I really had a choice.

“Let’s leave it at that for today.”

“That’s it?” I frowned. We’d not even done anything.

He smiled gently. “Today was the start. Your body is going to react. It’s best you go back to your room. Sleep it off.”

“But I’m not even tired.” I stated.

“You will be. Very soon.”

“Fine.” I muttered getting up, walking towards the door before I paused.

“What is it?” He asked quietly.

“You belong to the High King too don’t you?” I said quietly.

He nodded, his glasses glinting just a little as he did.

“Does it ever bother you? To be someone’s possession?”

He shook his head. “The High King has never treated me like that. Treated any of the Magi like that. We are free to travel as we choose. Free to live in whichever land we choose, and serve whichever king suits us, be it High King Uther or one of the Lesser Kings.”

“Lesser Kings?” I repeated.

“There are twelve in total. They rule over their own lands but Uther rules over them all.”

“And they have their own Magi?”

“Yes.”
