My hand gripped her throat. I could her blood pumping. Feel the way her heart seemed to skip. Her skin was so warm. So soft.

I lowered my face to hers, my eyes dropping to take in the way her lips parted, the way she seemed to gasp for air.

“This stops now.” I growled.

“I’m not doing anything.” She cried. Her body jerking more violently.

“You think you can play these games? You think you can act all innocent? I know what you are Fae. What you really are.” I snarled.

She whimpered, shaking her head, playing the innocent to the last.

I gritted my teeth. My head was screaming at me. My thoughts urging me over and over to claim her, to devour her right here in this corridor like I was an animal. Like I was some rabid beast.

I stepped back, letting her go. Letting her slump to the floor.

“It stops.” I growled before turning on my heel and leaving her. Leaving them.

“What the fuck was that?”

I turned staring at Nela who’d obviously followed me despite her orders to stay with the girl. To guard her.

I drew myself up but she cut across before I get any words out.

“Do you realise how stupid that was?” She hissed.

“Stupid?”

“Yes.” She said pushing me enough to show her frustration. “I’ve been trying to persuade her, trying to convince her, and in one foul movement you’ve undone everything.”

“Me?” I snarled. “That girl has been driving me mad. Tormenting me for weeks.”

She frowned, pausing. “What are you talking about?”

“Like you don’t know. Like you can’t feel it.” I hissed. Hell, if she was using her magic to manipulate everyone there was a high chance she was doing it to Nela too. That Nela was having similar dreams.

“Feel what?” She said.

“Her magic.”

“She hasn’t used any. Hasn’t done any outside of Jelric’s office.”

I shook my head, half laughing.

She was good, I’d give her that. This Fae was so much more adept, so much more masterful than the ones before. We’d brought a viper right into the castle walls, invited it in, and left it to do its worst.

“Fain.” She said quietly. “What’s going on?”

I narrowed my eyes. We’d always been more than simply commander and soldier. Hell, she was almost as close to me as Ridley. I trusted her, but I wasn’t going to divulge my secrets, my personal life, no matter how good of a friend she was.

“Fain?” She said again.

“It’s nothing.”

“Clearly not if you reacted like that.” She said.

I shook my head turning away. “The girl is driving me mad.”

“Because she’s Fae?”
