Page 84 of The Fae Girl 1

“Don’t ask.” I muttered tossing my cloak and picking up a practice sword.

Ridley smirked. “What’s the betting it’s got something to do with that girl?”

“What girl?” I said.

“The Fae girl.” Ridley said.

I rolled my eyes. “Can I not just have one day without that girl giving me trouble?”

“What’s she done now?” Ridley asked.

“Oh not much, just a bit of casual arson.” I muttered.

“Arson? She set fire to something?”

“Yeah. Apparently it was an accident.” I stated.

“How do you set fire to something by accident?” Ridley asked.

“That’s my point. First she jumps out of a window, now this.”

“She jumped out of a window?” Ridley said.

“Didn’t you hear? Half the damn castle is muttering about it.”

“Why? She wasn’t…” Ridley hesitated before deciding not to finish his sentence.

“Wasn’t what?” I asked narrowing my eyes.

“Trying to kill herself?” Ridley said.

“No. Apparently my brother made her do it.” I replied.

“What? Why would he do that?” Ridley asked.

“I think he’s been harassing her.” I said glancing round to make sure they weren’t being overheard. Even amongst soldiers, Rillon had his supporters.

“Uther?”

“No. Rillon you idiot.” I snapped.

“That makes more sense.” Ridley said. “But why?”

I gave him a look. Like it wasn’t bloody obvious.

“Do you think he’d try anything?” Ridley asked.

“I think he probably has by the fact she decided to throw herself out a window.” I said.

“Can’t blame her for that. Think I’d rather jump into the moat than let Rillon near me.” Ridley said picking up his sword. “So you are we going to practice or are we just going to talk about that girl all afternoon?”

I shook my head, raising my sword, and swung at him. Ridley swung his own blade to meet it before pushing me back. I smirked twisting round, aiming for his leg but Ridley quickly jumped and aimed his own attack.

“What I don’t get is why she didn’t say anything.” I said as I landed another blow which Ridley deflected.

“To who? To you?” Ridley replied. “Why would she?” He aimed his own blow and I only just managed to deflect it before stepping out of the way.

“I could have sorted Rillon.” I stated.
