Bella runs around snorting as she explores the place. I had to pay a lot more to allow her to stay but that was never not an option. I’m sure if I want I could just buy this place when my money comes through.

I order groceries. No more chefs, no more takeaways either. I’m done rebelling and I’m done being pampered too. I’m an okay cook. Not fantastic. But I guess now is the time to learn. Besides it’s just me so there’s no need to do anything flamboyant.

The first night I have grilled cheese sandwiches for dinner and they taste all the better for it being me who made them.

And when I curl up in a new bed , I sleep better than I have in a long time.

Rose

Darius has summoned us to his office. Not just me. Not just my parents but the entire Capulet family.

My stomach is in knots because I can’t figure out what this is. As the car drives through the streets I try to calm myself. He’s been acting more and more protective around me and I don’t want to think about what that means, what his intentions are.

When I get out in front of City Hall I know half my family are there, inside already. Tyrone is lounging against a stone balustrade, cigarette in hand, scowling at no one in particular.

As I make my way up he hollers at me. “Rose.”

I let out a low breath walking over. Ty has never had my back. Not once. I doubt recent events have changed that.

“Do you know what this is about?” He asks.

“Not a clue.” I reply.

“You mean your dear in-laws haven’t been kind enough to give you a hint?” He says.

“No.”

He snorts. “Perhaps you’re out of favour.”

“Perhaps.” I mutter. God I hope so. If the Blumenfelds decide to shun me I can only see that as a good thing for me. I can disappear into anonymity waiting till my money comes through and I can escape.

“Perhaps they’re suspicious.”

“Of what?” I ask.

“You’re seen publicly arguing with your husband and then suddenly he’s dead and you’ve inherited the lot.”

I screw my face up. “If you’re suggesting…”

“I’m suggesting nothing Rose. It’s just what everyone’s saying behind your back.”

“Like hell they are.” I reply.

“Why not ask? Oh right, because you’ve been hiding away, in your house, with all those newly inherited millions.”

“Fuck you.” I snap.

“Rose.” My mother says behind me.

I turn meeting her exasperated look head on. She gives me a once over like she’s inspecting my outfit choice then glances at Tyrone.

“Are you going to put that out?” She asks gesturing to the cigarette.

“When I’m done.” He replies.

She rolls her eyes, knowing better than to make further comment. “Let’s go.” She tucks her arm into mine and walks me into the building like I was about to duck and run.

“What is this about?” I ask once we’re inside. It’s so much cooler inside. Like this whole building was designed to be a refuge from the sun that seems to beat down onto everything.
