One question bled into the next until tears blinded my eyes. My chest tightened, my throat burned, and my fingers started typing.

Me:

Ask your bitch what Bible verse she wants to read at her wake. I'll make sure to read it over her coffin.

Chapter 43

Crown Gravehart

Reading Four's text, my brows shot up. I didn't know what her crazy ass was talking about.

"You okay?" Lakelyn asked, stepping back into the living room with two glasses of lemonade. I turned my phone toward her, letting her read the text from her daughter.

"I used to wonder if she got any of my genes, but now I know." Lakelyn laughed.

"You used to be a crash-out?" I asked, genuinely shocked. Lakelyn was so reserved and soft-spoken that I couldn't picture her firing off on somebody.

"Is that what y'all call erratic behavior these days? Crash-outs?"

"I don't call it nothing 'cause I'm not on that shit."

I glanced back at my phone to send a quick message.

Me

Aye, let me ask you something real quick.

Four

What, Crown?

Me:

What's your favorite Bible verse?

Four

Fuck you, Crown!

I laughed hard as hell, then powered my phone off and tossed it to the side.

"Mmhmm, I find that hard to believe," Lakelyn said, side-eyeing me. "What did you say to my daughter?"

I smirked. "I did what she wanted. I asked my bitch what her favorite Bible verse was."

Lakelyn was mid-sip when I said it and ended up choking on her drink. I jumped up and grabbed her arms, lifting them above her head to help her breathe.

"Boy, get off me," she rasped, still catching her breath.

"I can't have you choking when I need advice on how to deal with your daughter."

I sat back down, letting my head fall against the back of the couch while she pulled herself together. Funny thing was this wasn't even my first stop. I'd planned on heading to Chosyn's dispensary for some Zenade, but I ended up here instead. I guess that was divine timing or some shit.

Lakelyn finally looked at me, her expression softening. "What happened between the two of you? I've talked to her, but every time I brought you up, she either huffed or sounded like she wanted to cry."

Knowing Four couldn't hear my name without breaking down fucked me up. This wasn't supposed to be us. She and I weren't created to be on opposite ends of this love shit. This thing between us was fate. She was forged from my rib, and I was molded in the image of her heart.

"Crown," Lakelyn softly said.
