“Was it before or after he questioned you?”
“During,” I say with a chuckle. “He’s a little protective.”
“Makes sense. He’s got protective Daddy vibes for days.”
I hum, not quite sure I want to address that line of thinking. I’d much rather bask in the hold of my own Daddy.
“Need this,” he mumbles against my neck as his lips press against my skin. I wiggle a bit, the move both ticklish and arousing.
He chuckles, then shifts me until I’m leaning back against his chest, and we’re both facing Monty. Daddy laces my fingers with his, bringing them to my crossed legs.
“Are you ok, Daddy?” I ask softly.
“Yeah, Princess. I think I am. It wasn’t that way for a while. The minute I saw him on my table… It felt like my heart stoppedaltogether. I tried to hand off the surgery because I was so nervous.”
I turn to look up at him. “But you’re always so calm and cool.”
“Not when it comes to my boys. I’ve been trying to figure out how to get us all in the same place again. I’ve missed you two far more than I’ve allowed myself to admit. This happening kind of feels like fate forcing my hand.”
“Nooooo. That’s not it at all. The big mean guy tripped him. Did you see the footage?!”
He shakes his head, then squeezes our hands when I attempt to get my phone. “I’d rather not watch it right now. I’m still feeling a bit violent towards whoever did this. Don’t give me a reason to hunt him down. My skills should only be used for good.”
I laugh because it kinda sounds like he’s making a threat about cutting the other football guy up. My Daddy totally isn’t the murdering type though. He’s a doctor. He fixes people.
The look in his eyes right now makes me wonder how far he would go to protect us. I think it might be further than I suspected.
I can’t wait to tell Monty how violent our Daddy wanted to be for him.
CHAPTER 19
MONTY
Idon’t have to open my eyes to know everything has changed. The pain I’d felt before being put under isn’t there. It’s more a distant ache surrounded by a cloud haze of medicine.
There are also two very familiar scents surrounding me. I smile as I force my eyes to open.
Danny and Skye are asleep together, cuddled somewhat uncomfortably in the hospital recliner. They don’t have to be awake to tell me it’s not the best sleeping arrangement.
I doubt they care much. Even in sleep, I can see the strain all this is taking on them.
A soft knock comes from the door. It cracks, and Micah peeks in. When he sees I’m awake, he pushes in swiftly.
“Shhhh.”I put a finger over my lips to stop whatever tirade he was about to go on.
My brother rolls his eyes, a move that doesn’t even seem like him. As I gape at this imposter, he drops the side of the bed down and sits beside me.
In a soft voice he says, “You really fucking scared us all.”
“Wasn’t like I tried to make this happen. I wanted to win the game. Not be out for the rest of the season.” Or my career even.
Fuck, I don’t know how bad it is yet.
As if he can sense my spiraling thoughts, Micah holds up his hand. “Don’t go down that path. Your man over there pulled off the impossible—at least that’s what I keep hearing from the staff. They’re also curious about how the two of you came to be.”
His expression makes me laugh, which jostles me enough to release a groan. I’m achy from the game yesterday. Normally, I’d get an ice bath and a massage after we finished post-game press duties.
Since I didn’t manage to get any of that and have been confined to a bed, my body is revolting. I can’t wait until I can move around, even if it’s with crutches or something.
