Chapter 31

“I thought Makena agreed to do something small. There’s over sixty people here and I don’t even know most of them,” Faryn whispered to Landon as they sat at the front of the hall at their baby shower.

They had just arrived about twenty minutes prior and there were lots of people already in attendance. Three tables were filled with gifts and two clear boxes were filled with cards. Faryn thought Landon went too far when he rented a small moving truck to load up all the gifts, but she was happy that he did. They would have been making multiple trips to unload everything if he hadn’t.

“I don’t recognize some of them either,” Landon replied as he looked around.

He saw a few of his co-workers that he invited and some of his family members. Harley, her cousin Patrice, and Kyron were there as well, but he didn’t recognize some of the others. He assumed that it was Makena’s friends, but he wasn’t too sure.

“I’m trying to be cordial and not snap, but I can’t make no promises,” Makena said when she walked over to them.

“What’s wrong?” Faryn asked.

“Girl, my mama is the problem. Walking around here like she went half on some shit. Then, she had the nerve to invite some of her friends. She better be happy that they came with gifts. I was escorting all of their asses out if they didn’t,” Makena fussed.

“She got the entire game fucked up if she thinks she got it like that. No need to try to be a mother now. We’re grown as fuck,” Landon replied.

“Exactly. I just told grandma to go make her ass sit down before I be putting her out. I’m not for the bullshit today,” Makena said.

“What time do we eat?” Faryn asked.

“Whenever you want to honey. I already told the servers to feed y’all first,” Makena replied.

“I’m waiting for my brothers and sister to come,” Faryn said as she kept looking towards the front door.

She gasped a little when she saw Kane and Ava walk in instead. Ava had two gift bags in her hands that Lennox and Lance took from her. They were at the door accepting gifts from the guests and sitting them on the gift tables.

“That was my grandmother’s doing too,” Makena said as she watched them find a table close to the back of the room and sit down.

“Don’t worry about them baby. That nigga better not even look at you wrong. And that goes for Ava too,” Landon gritted.

“That bitch better sit there and shut up. I got my Nike’s on for a reason,” Makena said while showing them her colorful shoes.

“Oh God. I hope it won’t be that kind of event,” Faryn groaned.

“It won’t be boo. I’m just prepared for whatever. And I reserved a table close to you for your brothers and sister,” Makena said while pointing to a table that Faryn had never noticed.

“Aww, thanks Makena.” Faryn smiled.

“There they go,” Landon said while pointing at the front door.

Faryn smiled when she saw Roman, Chad, and Akira walking in together with their hands full of gifts. Never in a million years would she have imagined that she would once again be in the same room with her brothers and sister. When they went out to dinner the weekend before, Akira just assumed it would be her and Faryn. When Chad and Roman walked into the restaurant, she fell out of her chair trying to get to them. It was like the best day of their lives, just to be sitting down having dinner as a family. Chad and Roman kept apologizing for not being what their sisters needed them to be, but there were no hard feelings. They were the oldest and they tried their best. They kept up with each more than anything, but the same couldn’t be said for their younger siblings.

“I guess they’ll come over here whenever Lance and Lennox let them go,” Faryn laughed.

They’d already taken all the gifts from them, but they were standing there talking them to death. The boys were shocked to find out that Chad and Roman were Faryn’s brothers. Makena was also shocked when she found out that the man that her brother’s wife had left him for was his new girlfriend’s brother. She made Landon and Faryn tell her the story about four times before she finally got it. It sounded like a modern-day soap opera, but it was their life.

“What’s up y’all?” Landon smiled as he and Faryn got up to greet her brothers and sister when they finally made their way over.

“This is so beautiful. Who put everything together?” Akira asked.

“That would be me,” Makena spoke up.

She had heard all about Makena from Clarence and Faryn, but they had never met.

“Y’all, this is my sister, Makena,” Landon said as she introduced everyone.

“It’s nice to meet everybody. I’ve heard a lot about y’all already. I reserved this table for y’all to sit right next to Faryn. I’ll have them to start serving the food in a minute,” Makena said before she walked off.
