Chapter 35

Mug shots, fingerprints, and booking were all new words in Ava’s vocabulary. It took them forever to do anything and she ended up spending the night in jail. Thank God for her in-laws because she didn’t have to call anyone to bail her out. Kane’s parents, Carmen and Kyle, were right out front in the lobby waiting for her to be released. They were pissed when she told them what happened and they couldn’t wait to confront their son. Kyle drove Ava and his wife over to JB’s to get the cars while he went back to the men’s prison to wait for Kane. They had bailed him out first, but Ava was release before him.

“Where’s Kylie?” Ava asked when she and Carmen walked into her house to wait on Kyle to return.

“I dropped her off to your mother. But, don’t worry, I didn’t tell her what was going on. She was so happy to see Kylie that she didn’t even ask,” Carmen replied.

“I’ll tell her myself. I’ll probably be staying there until I can find me another place to stay,” Ava said.

“This is your home and my granddaughter’s comfort zone Ava. If anybody is leaving, it’s going to be Kane,” Carmen noted.

“I’m done with this marriage. I have a degree and I won’t have a problem finding a job and taking care of myself. I can’t do this anymore,” Ava said as she burst into tears.

Carmen jumped up and pulled her into a hug, trying her best to comfort her. Ava was a bit of a spoiled drama queen, but she and her husband love their daughter-in-law. The first few times Ava came to them crying over their son, they encouraged her to leave him. Of course, she didn’t take their advice because she had been blinded by the material things that he provided.

“I’m usually not one to say I told you so, but I did. When he cheated on you the first time, you should have been done. My husband and I know thousands of people. Helping you find a good job in communications is a piece of cake. I just have to know that you’re serious about this Ava. I love my kids and I’ll give them the world. What I won’t do is condone their imperfect behavior. Kane plays that secretive shit with Kya. He knows not to try it with me and his father,” Carmen replied.

Ava had a feeling that Kya knew more than she was saying, but she couldn’t prove it. She was always telling her to leave Kane too, but it was no secret that she was on her brother’s side.

“I’m very serious about moving on. I’m tired Carmen. I can’t even be mad with him because I sat back and allowed it. I let my love of material things take over my common sense. I feel like I don’t even know who I am anymore. I barely have a relationship with my family because of Kane, but that’s my fault too,” Ava admitted.

It was time for her to start taking responsibility for the role that she played in everything. At one time, Ava and her twin were closer than close. It wasn’t until Aiden started telling her stuff about Kane did they start to drift apart. She didn’t want to believe it, but the truth just kept coming out.

“I knew that something was up with him when he showed up to my office with Landon’s ex-wife. I’ve always known Landon to be a great father, but she was asking for joint custody of the kids. Kane and Landon were best friends at one time, so I knew that he was on some bullshit. My husband told me to give up the case, but she called and withdrew it before I had a chance to,” Carmen admitted.

“Wow. I asked him if he had anything to do with that and he looked me in the eyes and lied. The shit just gets deeper and deeper and I keep stepping in it,” Ava said as the front door opened.

Kane and his father walked in and he walked right up to Ava.

“Baby-” Kane said.

“Don’t say shit to me, Kane. Just get your shit and go,” Ava said as she waved him off, cutting off whatever lame ass apology he was about to issue.

“I’m not going nowhere. This is our home and I’m not leaving it,” Kane replied.

“Cool, I’ll leave then,” Ava said as she turned to walk away.

“No Ava, he’s leaving,” Kyle said as he gave his son a stern look.

“You can come by us for a while until y’all can figure everything out,” Carmen suggested.

“Can we just sit down and talk Ava?” Kane pleaded.

“In divorce court,” Ava replied sternly.

“I’m not signing shit!” Kane snapped in anger as he walked pass her and went to their bedroom.

Ava shook her head at his nerve. He was dead ass wrong, but he was mad with her. If she were being honest with herself, she probably would have divorced Kane years ago. It took him a minute, but Kane stormed out of their bedroom with his duffle bag thrown over his shoulder.

“Don’t waste your time filing for divorce Ava. It’s not gonna happen and I promise you that,” Kane said as he left and sped away soon after.

“Don’t worry about him Ava. If a divorce is what you want, then he can’t do shit to stop it,” Carmen assured her.

“And you call us if you and Kylie need anything. And I mean it Ava,” Kyle said as he kissed her cheek and left.

Ava locked up her house and took a shower as soon as they left. She put some clean clothes on and prepared to go see her mother. She was nervous at first but, as soon as she walked into Ella’s house, she felt a calmness come over her that she hadn’t felt in a while. Ella and Robin were sitting at the kitchen table eating, but her mother stood up and hugged her as soon as she saw her. Ava didn’t get a chance to say anything before Aiden walked in carrying her daughter and the ice cream he’d just got for her.

“Who bailed you out?” he asked while looking at his twin.
