Chapter 38
“A fucking baby Kane! Huh! You have a three-year-old son and you didn’t think to tell me or your mother about it?” Kyle fumed as he paced back and forth in his living room.
“You had a wife and child at home Kane. What the hell were you thinking?” Carmen chimed in.
Kane sat there in silence as he got scolded like he was a child. That’s exactly why he refused to move back home with them. His life had spiraled out of control and he didn’t know what to do to fix it. Ava made good on her promise and filed for a divorce. Kane meant what he said and didn’t sign the papers. In fact, he ripped them up into little pieces and mailed them back to her. He was sure that the divorce would be granted eventually, but he wasn’t going to make it easy on her. They had to be separated for a year for anything to happen anyway.
Having his wife find out that he had an outside child was never a part of the plan. His son’s mother, Shantel, was a ghetto bird who he got caught up with. She was four months pregnant when she revealed it to Kane and he immediately told her to get rid of it. When she informed him that she was having a boy, he quickly had a change of heart. Kane had always wanted a son, but his wife didn’t want any more kids. One was enough for her and she’d already had the little girl that she wanted. Just like always, Kane let his wife have her way. She was the love of his life and telling her no was never something that he wanted to do. Ava was the only woman that he could truly say he ever loved. Well, she was, until he met Faryn.
Just thinking about Faryn put a frown on his face. In his mind, none of his misfortunes started until she entered the picture. He and Landon would still be best friends and he would still have his family intact. It wasn’t her fault that he cheated, but her presence started a chain of unfortunate incidents. Then, to top it off, he’d learned through Ava, before they split, that the man he’d seen Aiden hanging with was her brother, Roman. He was the same man who Malia had left Landon for. Shit was getting crazier by the minute and Kane didn’t know if he was coming or going. He already had to watch his back because of Aiden. Now, he had to add Faryn’s brothers to his list of enemies.
“So, what do you plan to do Kane?” his father asked, shaking him away from his thoughts.
“About what?” Kane questioned.
“What the hell do you mean about what? Your son’s mother called my wife saying that she didn’t have a place to stay. You need to man the hell up and handle your business,” Kyle fussed.
“We have a business Kane. I don’t need random women calling my office telling me about grandkids that I didn’t even know I had,” Carmen noted.
“Man, she got two other kids. She’s acting like I’m her only baby daddy. Why didn’t she ask one of them other niggas? It ain’t my job to find her a place to stay,” Kane said, making his father look at him like he was crazy.
“Are you out of your fucking mind boy?” Kyle barked as he walked up on his son.
“Look, let’s all calm down and try to figure this out,” Carmen said as she placed a comforting hand on her husband’s chest.
“This is not our problem to figure out Carmen. We’ve been fixing his messes since he got old enough to make them and I’m sick of it. Kane is a grown ass man and it’s time for you to stop pacifying him. He’s dragging our family name deeper and deeper through the mud. His ass is selfish and only thinks about himself. I’m ready to wash my hands with him and this entire situation. If you wanna sit here and help him out of yet another mess, then be my guest. I’m done with this shit,” Kyle said as he stormed out of room and out of the house, slamming the front door behind him.
“He act like I asked for his help.” Kane frowned once his father was gone.
“You need to understand the position that you’ve put us in Kane. Until today, we never even knew that this woman and child existed. For years, we were under the impression that Kylie was our only grandchild. Now, I have no problem putting her up in one of our rental properties rent free, but it’ll be on her to pay her bills. Does she have a job?” Carmen asked.
“Yeah. She’s a secretary or whatever,” Kane replied.
“Well, you need to set up a time and date for us to discuss this. I don’t want her here or at my office. Maybe we can meet up at a restaurant or something. I’ll let you know when and where. I have to calm your father down before I can do anything else.”
“Man. He be tripping for nothing,” Kane said.
“It’s not for nothing Kane. You might not think so, but this is a very serious situation. I know that you were trying to protect you wife’s feelings, but you were selfish to keep that child hidden the way you did. Now, we have a grandchild that we don’t even know and who doesn’t know us. And before I do anything financially for anybody, I need something in black and white to prove that what she’s saying is true.”
“We already did that. A DNA test was the first thing that I did when he was born. I know he’s mine,” Kane replied.
He pulled out his phone and showed his mother pictures of the little boy who had features that were identical to his and Kylie’s.
“Yeah, he’s yours. God, Kane, you should have said something,” Carmen fussed.
“Kya knew, but I couldn’t tell that to you and daddy. I couldn’t run the risk of Ava finding out,” Kane admitted.
“Kya is not your parent, but I’m gonna get on her ass too. You were married, and she shouldn’t have condoned that mess.”
“I’m still married,” Kane corrected.
“Not for long, but that’s irrelevant right now. I want to meet him. I’ve already lost out on three years of his life at no fault of my own. Kylie needs to know that she has a brother as well. I’m sure she’ll be happy about it, if nobody else is,” Carmen replied.
Kylie was always saying that she wanted a brother or sister, so that was going to make her day. Ava was probably heartbroken, and she had every right to be. Carmen and her husband loved her like a daughter and they hated what their son had done to her. Thankfully, she had found a job that she loved, but they had no problem helping her out financially if she needed them to.
“I’ll call his mama to see if I can get him for a little while Saturday. I’ve never taken him anywhere before,” Kane admitted.
“And that’s just sad,” Carmen said as she shook her head and walked away from him.
