Chapter 8

“You need to stop being so scary Faryn. That man gon’ get tired of waiting for you to stop playing,” Harley said as she sat on the bar stool and watched her friend prepare her food.

“How am I playing? I like him but, honestly, I’m scared,” Faryn admitted.

“What are you scared of?” Harley asked.

“It’s like he’s almost too perfect. He’s doing everything right and I can just see myself falling in love with him. I’m just having a hard time trying to figure out why he’s been single for over a year. Like, why did your wife leave you if you’re so well put together? Then, there’s my job. I can risk getting fired just by being with him. What if it doesn’t work out and I have nothing to fall back on?” Faryn said, revealing to Harley all the thoughts that had been going through her head.

“Stop being so negative all the time Faryn. Nobody is gonna know that y’all are together. It’s been three months and all you do is invite the man to your house and cook for him. Hell, you could have at least let him knock the cob webs off your coochie,” Harley fussed.

“Bitch, please. And why do you care so much? He’s not complaining and neither am I,” Faryn noted.

“He’s not complaining yet, but it’s only a matter of time. It’s obvious that he wants more. He even brought his kids over here to meet you.”

“First off, I met Lance a long time ago. He’s my client, remember? Secondly, I invited his kids over here, so he didn’t do that on his own,” Faryn acknowledged.

Lance had been making great progress in school and home since he started seeing Faryn. Landon told her about the good reports that he’d been getting from school and she wanted to reward him. She didn’t want to leave his brother out, so she invited them both to her house with their father for dinner. They asked her to make some Philly cheese steak sliders with fries, and Faryn granted their wish. She loved to see Landon interacting with his kids and she couldn’t understand how any woman would leave such a perfect setting.

“All that is irrelevant Faryn. You said yourself that Landon is a good man. Stop trying to find fault when there obviously is none. There’s no such thing as being too perfect. You know how many women wish they had a man like him? Are you willing to miss out on a chance at happiness because you’re afraid to take a small risk?” Harley asked, giving her a lot to think about.

Faryn never got a chance to respond because Kyron was texting Harley’s phone before she had a chance to. Harley frowned and stood up, preparing to go back to her own house.

“What’s wrong?” Faryn asked as she took in the look on her friend’s face.

“He gets on my nerves always bringing these random ass niggas to my house. I’m going off on his ass as soon as his company leaves. I’m sick of this shit,” Harley fussed.

“Who is he bringing over there now?” Faryn questioned.

“He just asked me where I was because he wants me to meet one of his friends. Some nigga that he hasn’t seen since he was a damn teenager and he got him up in my damn house,” Harley fumed.

“Kyron better stop being so trusting. He saw what happened when he invited one of his friends to y’all house the last time,” Faryn reminded her.

“That’s my point. Nigga was a damn wanted fugitive and he had him sitting up in our house drinking beers and shit. Crazy thing is, he had just robbed a gas station the day before he came there. How fucking stupid can Kyron be?” Harley fumed.

“Not too much on my boy now. You know Kyron got a heart of gold and he loves to entertain company,” Faryn defended.

“Don’t take up for his ass when he tried to hook you up with the criminal,” Harley laughed.

“He tries to hook me up with everybody,” Faryn said as she walked her to the door.

They stood in the hallway and talked for a while until Kyron opened the door and interrupted.

“I was just about to come get your ass,” he said when he walked out of the apartment followed by another man.

Faryn’s eyes widened in surprise as she stared into a familiar face from her past.

“Faryn?” the man questioned as he looked at a slightly older, prettier version of his first love.

“Hey Jo-Jo. How have you been?” Faryn asked the man who she’d given her virginity to when she was only fifteen years old.

“Man, I know you ain’t acting shy. Give a nigga a hug girl,” Jo-Jo said as he walked up to her and pulled her into his tight embrace.

“Well damn, Faryn. I thought you were a good girl. How do you know this nigga?” Kyron joked.

He introduced Harley to his friend as he watched him openly admire Faryn. Kyron and Harley were oblivious to Faryn’s past, but she could see that Harley was wondering. Faryn was going to tell her friend everything. She was just waiting for the right time.

“Man, this was my baby back in the day. I couldn’t stay my ass out of jail back then and we lost contact. This must be my lucky day,” Jo-Jo said as he admired Faryn’s curvy frame.
