Chapter 23
Eight weeks, the equivalent of two months, was how long the life had been growing inside of Faryn. With the help of Makena, she and Landon had found a good doctor, and everything was good so far. Faryn was concerned because she had drunk some wine before she knew she was pregnant, but he assured her that she would be fine. Now, there was another problem that she had to deal with. Four days in a row, Faryn had experienced the worst morning sickness ever. It started out feeling like an upset stomach until she began to throw up any and everything that she’d eaten. She had taken off from work the day before and stayed home in bed. Landon and the kids were so attentive. They kept bringing her ginger ale and crackers all day to make sure she felt better.
“We don’t have to go anywhere baby. My grandma will understand,” Landon said as he rubbed Faryn’s back.
“No Landon, I’ll be fine. I just need to let that medicine kick in,” Faryn replied.
Her doctor had prescribed her some medicine for nausea and it worked wonders. He told her that the feeling would subside the further she got into her pregnancy and she couldn’t wait. It was Ms. Ella’s birthday and she was doing her traditional dinner with her immediate family. Landon had all the food catered from a soul food restaurant and Makena got her a huge three-tiered cake. Landon said that his grandmother liked to do her birthday dinner at her house, instead of a restaurant. That way, they wouldn’t have to rush or be on anybody else’s schedule. A knock on their bedroom door shook Faryn from her thoughts, as Lennox and Lance entered the room.
“Are you feeling better Faryn?” Lance asked her.
“I got you some more crackers,” Lennox said as he handed her another pack of saltines.
Landon smiled at the way his sons catered to Faryn. He was happy that they loved her as much as he did. He couldn’t be with a woman that his sons didn’t approve of.
“Aww, y’all are so sweet. I feel much better, but I’ll put the crackers in my purse, just in case,” Faryn replied.
“You ready to go or do you need a little more time?” Landon asked her.
“No, I’m ready. I don’t want us to be late,” she replied as she got up and stretched.
“Damn,” Landon mumbled as he looked at Faryn’s ass.
“I heard you, freak,” Faryn laughed.
Landon and his sons grabbed the gifts that they had for Ella and prepared to leave. Faryn felt much better than she did before, and she was happy for that. She was ready to eat, and Landon had ordered lots of food for her to choose from. It took them about twenty minutes, but they were parking in front of Ella’s house soon after.
“Happy Birthday GG!” Lennox and Lance said when they walked into their great-grandmother’s house.
“Thanks, my babies. Put the gifts on the table over there. I’ll open everything later,” Ella replied.
Landon and Faryn greeted her with hugs and kisses before joining Makena and her husband in the kitchen. Landon was happy to see his brother-in-law because he didn’t get to see him that often anymore. Ross Sr. drove trucks and he was always on the road. He’d only been doing it for a year, but he and Makena hated it. They had rental property, thanks to Clarence, but Ross still felt like the man of the house should always work. Landon had purchased and upgraded the laundromats that Clarence told him about, but he had never opened them. He didn’t trust just anyone to manage them. He wanted to offer the job to his brother-in-law before he looked anywhere else. That way, he would have someone that he trusted running the businesses and Makena would have her husband at home every night like they both wanted. He had no problem matching his pay if he decided to do it.
“Look at my niece,” Makena said as she rubbed Faryn’s flat stomach.
“What the hell are you rubbing? There’s nothing there,” Faryn laughed.
“So what? I want her to know her auntie’s voice,” Makena replied.
“How do you even know if it’s a girl?” Faryn questioned.
“It better be,” Landon chimed in.
“My grandma will tell me once you start showing,” Makena noted.
“Don’t even encourage her with that mess. The doctor will tell us when the time is right,” Landon replied.
“Say what you want, but I’ve never been wrong even once. I knew the sex of all my grandkids and great-grandkids before the doctor even said anything,” Ella acknowledged.
They were a few minutes early, so they just sat around and talked for a while. Makena had already set everything up and there was nothing else left to do. The food was warming, and the cake and gift tables were set up nicely. Ella let Faryn eat before anyone came because she couldn’t wait.
“Damn. How y’all start eating and everybody not even here yet?” Ava asked with her usual snobbish attitude when she walked inside with her daughter.
As usual, she was dressed in designer labels from head to toe and her makeup was flawless. Ava was beautiful on the outside, but her attitude took away from her beauty. It was as if she was on a pedestal looking down at everyone else. At least, that’s how she acted to Faryn.
“Faryn is the only one eating. My great-grandbaby is hungry.” Ella smiled.
“Oh yeah, congrats on the baby. I see you and Landon ain’t waste no time. How long have y’all been together again?” Ava asked.
