“I damn sure hope so. She’s good people too. Shit, we both need to be trying to settle down. We’re not getting no younger.”

“Yeah, this street shit getting old now. We gotta rap about some shit soon Cuz but I’ll let you know when.”

He really wanted to explain the Reanna situation to Remi. He wasn’t on no shady shit but he had no idea of knowing how things were gonna play out. Remi was his favorite cousin and he didn’t want them to fall out because he was keeping secrets.

“You good?” Remi looked at her cousin in concern.

“No doubt.” Ferris nodded right as their grandmother walked back over to them.

“I wanted to give her some time alone with her husband.” She sat down with her grandkids while her daughter-in-law stayed by her husband’s final resting place.

Once they left the graveyard, Remi dropped Ferris and her grandmother off before she took Marva to the store. Lolliewas staying out all night with her male friend, so she went to grab some snacks for the movies that she planned to watch all night.

“Are you sure you’re gonna be okay in here all by yourself, Mae?”

“Girl, I be in here by myself more than you think. You know I’m a homebody. Lollie can’t sit still, but I’m content with my snacks and a good movie. You know Harry asked me to speak at the tournament that’s coming up, but I don’t know if I can. You know how shy I am. I can’t speak in front of a crowd.”

“What does he want you to say?”

“You know the money is going to the cancer society. He just wants me to say a few words about your father and how it all got started. I just don’t know.”

“You can do it, Mae. I’ll go up and help you if you want me to.”

“Girl, I get all tongue tied and nervous. I wouldn’t even know what to say.”

“I can write something up if you want me to. I understand if you don’t want to do it though.”

“I’ll think about it and let you know. What do you have planned for the rest of the day?”

“I have a date.” Remi blushed and smiled.

“It’s about damn time. When do we get to meet him?”

“Really, Mae?” Remi gave her stepmother the side eye.

“Yes really. I’m happy that you’re finally living again and not just existing. I know that you did what you had to do for your father, but you’re still young. Reid lived an amazing life and he would want you to do the same.”

“Yeah, I know. I was so used to my routine with him until it became habit. Once he died, I felt like I didn’t know what to do with all my free time. I’m taking my time though.”

“As you should. And I’m speaking for me and Lollie, we want to meet him.”

“My granny does too and y’all will soon. It’s still new and kinda complicated.”

“Well, we’re here whenever you’re ready.”

“What about you, Mae? Do you think you’ll ever date or get married again?”

“I doubt it. I had a great husband and I don’t think nobody will ever live up to the standard that he set. I’m happy and content.”

“And that’s all that matters to me.” Remi kissed her stepmother on the cheek before she got up and prepared to leave. Blaze was texting and she knew what that meant. She locked up her mother’s house and prepared to lay up for the rest of the night.

“Where you at, love?” Blaze asked when Remi picked up the phone. He had some work to do for one of the companies that he did payroll for and it took him a while to wrap it up. The basketball game was in a few hours and he wasn’t really feeling it. His grandmother’s health seemed to be declining by the day and he was sometimes scared to leave her. Zita had basically become her sitter but she was cool with it. Blaze was a financial blessing to her and she enjoyed not having to punch a clock every day.

“I’m on my way, boo. I have to go drop something off to Mae first. Is everything okay?” Remi’s stepmother had finally made up her mind to speak at the tournament on her husband’sbehalf. Remi had written something up for her and she had just dropped it off and helped her read over it.

“Yeah, Nana is sleeping and I just finished working.”

“How is she feeling?”
