Page 37 of Max

Max hoped she’d say she should probably go to bed. She was sitting there in that oversized t-shirt and those barely there sleep shorts, and his dick had grown so hard it was well past painful. She was a goddess. That was all there was to it, and she was driving him crazy. It was getting harder and harder to keep his hands to himself.

“Sure. Why don’t you start the app, and I’ll find us something to drink? Do you want another glass of wine?”

She shook her head. “I want to be clearheaded when we go back to the hospital.”

Max respected that and instead grabbed two cans of Coke, another of Cole’s favorite things, and came back over to sit beside Shay, making sure to sit well away from her this time. She stared at him, an impish light in her eyes, and scooted herself right back over, barely an inch between them.

Fuck me.

“What do you think about K dramas?”

“K what?”

“Oh. My. God.”

“What?”

“You’ve never seen one before?”

“Uh…no?”

Her blue eyes were so wide, he got concerned, but he grew even more concerned when she turned on some foreign show that had subtitles.

“Uh, Shay?”

“Yeah?”

“You know that’s not in English, right?”

“Yes, I know. You need to read the subtitles. We’re starting from episode one. Be quiet and watch the show. Then after the first couple of episodes, tell me you’re not hooked.”

He seriously doubted anything with subtitles would hook him, but if it made her happy, he’d watch the damn show. Anything to erase all the fear and worry from her eyes.

So, he settled back, opened his Coke, and started reading damn subtitles. Until his eyes closed and he fell asleep.

The scream jerked him awake. He looked to the woman who was currently sprawled out over him, and she stared back with wide eyes. They scrambled off each other the same time he heard the scuffle on the front porch.

“Stay here,” he said and ran for the door. Jasper’s heavy footsteps were also coming down the staircase. Jerking open the door, he saw Cole grappling with a petite bundle.

“You son of a…”

“Desi?”

They stopped struggling on the ground, and his sister grinned up at him. “Hey, Maxi Pad.”

“I told you never to call me that!” He glowered at his sister then reached down to pull her into a tight hug. “What are you doing here?”

“You needed me.” She didn’t have to say why. It was the same reason he’d thought to call her earlier.

“You have to work tonight.”

She shrugged. “I canceled it. You’re more important to me than anything else.”

“How did you get here?”

“I caught the red eye then hopped on a bus.”

“You rode public transportation?” Concern hit him hard. “That’s not safe, Desiree.”
