Chapter Thirty-One

For twenty minutes, they stood together in silence, Alexander leaning his back against the door of their shared room, and Kelsey standing in front of him, waiting. Staring. Hurting.

Scared.

She’d told him she only does flings, but… something about that admission didn’t sit right with her now. Something about Alexander made her want to try for more than just a quick thing.

But she didn’t trust those feelings.

She shook her head. No, she didn’t trust those feelings at all.

And Alexander had barely even made eye contact in those twenty minutes of heavy silence. What was he thinking? His dark eyes were brooding. His dark eyebrows bunched. Every so often, he ran his hand through his black hair. But he never said anything, never asked her to reconsider her stance.

Alexander was a guy who loved relationships.

Kelsey was a girl who loved the rush of a good fling.

She loved being free; hated being tied down.

How would the two of them ever meet in the middle?

Did she want to?Couldshe? What would it be like to meet Alexander halfway? What did that even look like? Repeat hookups with no strings? That was just basically a series of flings, no matter how she tried to spin it. At thirty years old, Kelsey was well set in her ways, and he probably was too. Expecting Alexander to be cool with causal sex was almost as absurd as expecting her to settle down.

And yet…

She swallowed hard, shaking her head.

No. There was no way.

She couldn’t possibly want to be with Alexander. Like, onlywith Alexander.

The thought was preposterous!

Except that it wasn’t. Because she fuckinglikedhim.

Shit.

Kelsey chuckled softly at how ridiculous it all was and his eyes locked on hers.

Dark. Heavily lidded. Intense.

Hello. She pulled in a breath.

Alexander reached to the side and clicked the lock into place, then he pushed off the door quickly, startling her. She took a step back, looking up at him with wide eyes.

“Well,Chelsea,” he said, “it seems we’re at a bit of an impasse.”

Kelsey swallowed hard. The darkness in his eyes and the sound of the name he’d always used just to irritate her ignited her desire. It bloomed deep in her belly, warm and familiar.

This was something she understood. Body to body communication was a language Kelsey spoke fluently.Especially, it appeared, when it came to Alexander Arroyo.

Kelsey cocked an eyebrow. “What do we do about it, this impasse you speak of?”

Alex stalked toward her. With each step forward, she took a step backwards.

He smirked as he watched her walk away from him, never stopping his forward momentum. “We’re not going todoanything about it.”

“Really…?” Her gaze flicked back and forth between his eyes, and that ball of lust coiled tighter in response to the heat in his dark irises. “You don’t want todoanything about it?”
