I lean over and place my head on her shoulder. “I do.”

“Yeah. That’s pretty obvious, friend.” She clinks her mug against mine. “Cheers to that.”

“Why would we cheers to that? I’m screwed.”

Danielle’s burst of laughter makes me jump. “Let’s fucking hope so.”

“No. I can’t. That’s crossing a line, I’m sure of it.”

She groans. “You’re being ridiculous. He’s hot as fuck, right? Hit that.”

I snort, nearly choking on my wine. “Danielle, I can’t justhit that,” I whisper, looking around to make sure no one is close enough to hear this conversation. “He’s mytenant.”

“Why not? Haven’t you ever seenHow Stella Got Her Groove Back?”

I roll my eyes.

“Spoiler alert,” Danielle says, leaning toward me and lowering her voice. “Shehitthat.”

“That’s a movie.”

“And?”

“And… this is real life. He’s closer to Ari’s age than mine, Dani. It’s… not right.”

“He’s an adult. You’re an adult.’ She shakes her head, then sticks her wine mug back in the cooler and lies back. “I don’t see the problem.”

“Can you just support me in not talking about him today? I have to get him out of my head.”

“Fine. But I wholeheartedly disagree you on this decision.”

“Fine. But you have to support me anyway.”

“Fine.”

“Fine.” With a huff, I lay back and close my eyes. I was hoping she’d be more help, maybe talk me out of wanting Cas as much as I do, but I should have known better. Of course her answer would be to act on my feelings. She’s always been the devil and I’ve always been the angel. No matter how much time passes in our friendship, our roles have not reversed.

I always do the right thing. The appropriate thing.

Thesafething.

Throwing my arm over my face, I whine, “Why am I like this?”

Danielle flips onto her side and moves my arm so she can look at me. “It doesn’t have to be like this, MaRo. Come to the dark side. We have snacks and sexy men.”

Chapter Twenty-Four

Maryn

Something thumps against my arm, pulling me out of a light sleep.

“Oh, sweet baby Jesus,” Danielle whispers. That thump I felt must have been my best friend trying to get my attention.

“What?”

“Maryn, shit. Sit up slowly. Play it cool. There’s an absoluteAdoniswalking down your beach access stairs. Tell me this isn’t him.”

I lift my head from my arms and squint up at the man striding toward us down the stairs. I sigh, my shoulders relaxing as I lay my head back on my arms. “That’s him.”
